Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

Applications are now invited from suitably qualified candidates for a University Assistant/Associate Professorship in Energy (thermofluids). The particular technical specialism of the appointee is not prescribed but is expected to be related to energy use including power generation, transport, systems and storage.

The successful candidate will be based in the Energy Group at the Department of Engineering. The group has a long-established reputation for experimental, computational and theoretical research in thermofluids across a wide range of application areas. Candidates with research in the following areas are especially encouraged to apply: (a) fundamentals of thermofluids related to energy transformation and use, including reacting flows, combustion, low-carbon fuels, nuclear energy, fuel cells, chemical and electrochemical processes; (b) cross-disciplinary research in reacting flows, mass and heat exchange across interfaces and porous media, with applications across engineering; (c) engineering and science areas ranging from traditional reacting flow measurements, computation, and two-phase flows with applications.

The Energy Group has access to state-of-the-art shared laboratories and facilities, and collaborates widely across Engineering, the University and elsewhere. The successful candidate should be able to establish an independent research theme within the broad area of energy, as well as collaborating with others in related fields. The primary requirement will be to develop a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department's international reputation, and to play a full part in ensuring that the Department maintains its top-rank research rating.

The duties of the post mainly involve research and teaching. Research activity is expected to account for 60% of full-time whereas teaching and administration is expected to account for 40%. The successful candidate is expected to make a full contribution to teaching in the areas of thermodynamics, heat transfer and power generation. Responsibilities will include teaching within the Energy Technologies MPhil and throughout the four-year undergraduate Engineering Tripos. The Department would especially welcome applications from candidates not traditionally well represented in engineering.

The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Engineering's Trumpington Street site in Central Cambridge. The appointment will be for a probationary period of five years and, subject to satisfactory performance, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter.

We particularly welcome applications from women and /or candidates from a BME background for this vacancy as they are currently under-represented at this level in our department.
