Job summary

Applications are invited for several Lecturer/Senior Lecturer positions within the Department of Physics at Imperial College. The positions are permanent academic appointments. The post holders will play a leading role in shaping the future research and teaching portfolio of the Department. We are seeking candidates whose expertise will strengthen our academic mission to deliver world-class scholarship, education and research. Appointment of the highest calibre candidates will be based on scientific excellence.

The Department is structured into five research communities that drive new research directions: Light, Matter, Physics of Particles, Physics of the Universe, and Space, Plasma and Climate. In this call, we particularly welcome applications in the following research areas:

Atmospheric dynamics of extreme weather.Direct search for dark matter.Physics implementation of neuromorphic hardware.Quantum technology.Quantum Field Theory and gravity.Application of Artificial Intelligence to astrophysical modelling.

We also encourage applications of outstanding researchers in other areas of physics.

Duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

Develop and lead an innovative research programme of international quality.Teach and examine students at all levels including lecturing undergraduate and postgraduate courses, supervising research and PhD students, providing pastoral support and contributing to curriculum development work.Act as a coach and role model through excellent practice and mentoring of colleagues.Contribute to the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusivity in Physics.Undertake appropriate administrative tasks in support of the Department's activities.

Essential requirements

The essential criteria for the post are:

Hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in Physics or a related discipline.A proven track record in conducting high quality independent research, as evidenced by high quality publications in peer reviewed journals. Experience of training undergraduate and postgraduate students.Experience of preparing grant applications for submission.Experience of developing skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.An effective communicator, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively to a range of audiences through a variety of methods and media. An ability to raise significant research funding from a variety of sources, commensurate with your career stage.Evidence of contribution to the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusivity.

For appointment at Senior Lecturer level, in addition to the above, the following are essential criteria:

Extensive professional experience and a demonstrated reputation in their field at the national and international level.A track record of independent scientific work and leading a team of researchers.A proven track record of securing external research funding.Substantial experience in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training, including successful PhD student supervision.
