Glyndwr Innovations Ltd (GIL), a subsidiary of Wrexham University, is one of the UK's leading manufacturers of large optics and optical systems, based at the OpTIC Technology Centre in St Asaph. GIL specialises in the manufacture of metre class, precision optical components and the design and verification of complex optic systems that are deployed in astronomical observatories, aircraft, satellites and physical science institutions. Examples of GIL's previous contracts include components and systems for the ESO Extremely Large Telescope, Airbus, and QinetiQ.

GIL is looking to expand the team with the hiring of a new Metrologist to provide technical expertise and support to the production and engineering teams. We are looking for a candidate with a range of scientific knowledge and skills that they can apply to our testing methods and manufacturing processes to help strengthen and develop our core capabilities.

Job description and responsibilities

As a Metrologist at GIL, you will work closely with a small technical team of scientists, engineers and operators to deliver nanometre-level precision in the manufacture of large-scale optical components.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Measurement of precision optical components and systems
  • The design and verification of bespoke optical tests, including the characterisation of their performance limitations
  • Reporting of technical progress for metrology processes to peers, commercial customers and collaborators
  • The development and documentation of bespoke data analysis methods and procedures

The role requires a thorough analytical approach and scientific rigour to all tasks, emphasising rapid problem-solving and flexibility to deliver results in a timely and effective manner.

Qualifications, skills and experience required

In our search for a Metrologist we are looking for the following:

  • Educated to degree level or higher in a physical science or engineering discipline
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, preferably on dimensional metrology equipment and/or optical systems
  • An understanding of geometrical and wave optics
  • A good understanding of measurement uncertainties and experimental statistics, and experience applying this understanding to experimental setups
  • Familiarity with scientific analysis software and/or programming (ie Excel, MATLAB, Python, ImageJ etc.)
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills

The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable.

Role compensation package

  • 37-hour working week, with the option to work these hours over either 4 or 5 days
