Tes is supporting the appointment of a Second in English to join a Academy based in Redcar and Cleveland.

This is a welcoming and supportive academy, with a relentless determination to provide the very best education for every child. They place students at the centre of everything they do, with a focus on creating a culture of success, a positive climate for learning, and increased attainment, achievement and social and emotional development.

They have won numerous awards as a school and they have been accredited with the prestigious IQM Award, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to them. They are also proud to have been awarded Silver Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

They work hard to ensure they reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put their vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

About the role

The English Department is friendly, welcoming and supportive. It is made up of 7 teachers and a one-to-one tutor, all with a wide range of experience and skills. There are many opportunities for staff to develop a range of career opportunities within the school and the trust, making the English Department at the Academy Redcar a rewarding place to work.

The role of second in department is both a stimulating and rewarding one. You will be responsible for supporting the HoD on their journey to outstanding. The KS3 Curriculum is considered a working document and, in this role, you will have primary responsibility for the constant development of a dynamic and challenging curriculum.

The current curriculum is engaging and bold with reading at its heart. The curriculum has been designed to enable texts to be used to foster a love of reading and learning. These texts, such as Ghost Boys and The Breadwinner, encourage students to think about the world beyond Redcar. The school has invested a lot of money in novels which are up to date, relevant and which deal with a range of issues faced by young people today. A wide range of poetry is also embedded in all units of work in years 7, 8, and 9.

Teaching takes place in the department's seven classrooms with every teacher having their own dedicated room. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards. There is a library with a wide range of fiction to support students' reading needs which is run by a full-time enthusiastic librarian.

There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This includes Accelerated Reader and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. The specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers.

As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. They aim to make all their teachers 'experts' in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using their thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. They have the benefit of support from the trust's team of expert English directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside them to develop their expertise.
