Computational Biologist

Oxford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom University of Oxford Full time

Location: MRC Translational Discovery Immunology Unit (TIDU), Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford.
Contract Type: Fixed-Term for 2 years
Hours: Full-Time – Flexible working arrangements could be considered.

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has become available in the Transactional Discovery Immunology Unit (TIDU) working on collaborative projects with Prof. Alison Simmons (Intestinal Immunity Group) and Dr Agne Antanaviciute (Computational Biology Group). We are seeking a highly motivated and talented computational Biologist to join our multidisciplinary team working in close collaboration with computational biologists, wet lab biologists and clinicians to deliver ambitious and cutting-edge research.

Emerging single cell omics techniques such as scRNA-seq, scATAC-seq, DOGMA-seq and spatial transcriptomics have revolutionized our understanding of human tissue biology in health and disease. By defining cellular heterogeneity, differentiation, and cross-talk, these techniques are capable of highlighting the molecular determinants governing development and homeostasis in health and the mechanisms underpinning cellular remodelling in disease. This has been especially true in the human intestine, where application of these and other methods have helped re-evaluate the spectrum of cellular phenotype involved in the organs diverse biological processes. This post will build on previous work from the team which has shown how the cells of the human intestine are maintained and dysregulated in diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease. A number of computational biology research projects are available in the areas of single cell RNA-Seq and multi-omics data analysis; immune repertoire analysis; spatial transcriptomics/proteomics and image analysis; and development of new computational methods and models for spatial data analysis.

About You

The successful applicant should have excellent verbal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment. You should have good interpersonal skills and a flexible and proactive attitude.

You should hold a PhD/DPhil in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science or another relevant discipline.

You should have a good publication record and have familiarity with the existing literature and research field.

You should be proficient in Python and/or R, BASH, working in HPC environments and have experience analysing large scale sequencing data.
