The Opportunity:

The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint an experienced Service & Maintenance Technician to join its skilled Technical Services team of over 40 technical staff. Working in collaboration with the other technicians and the School's new Equipment Officer, the post-holder will plan, coordinate and deliver routine servicing and maintenance of equipment across the School. This will include responsibility for documentation relating to maintenance records and preparation of service reports. The Service & Maintenance Technician will assist other technical staff with commissioning of equipment and installations, and fault-finding and repair of equipment. For highly specialised equipment, they will support laboratory managers, PIs and other staff as necessary in identifying suitable external providers to ensure a coordinated and efficient approach across the School.

The Technical Services team provides support across the School's ~60 laboratories and workshops, supporting the work of 4 engineering disciplines, 7 research institutes and a number of small research facilities including, FloWave ), FASTBLADE ; located in Rosyth) and SMC ). The range of machines and equipment that the post holder will encounter is therefore extremely broad. Equally they will encounter a wide variety of safety hazards, spanning, biological, chemical and physical risks. The successful candidate should therefore demonstrate excellent health and safety awareness and familiarity with health and safety documentation and systems (e.g., risk assessments, COSHH).

It is anticipated that the post-holder, while primarily based in the School's mechanical workshops, may also spend periods of time working in labs and other workshops across the School.

With extensive work experience in mechanical maintenance roles and with relevant engineering qualifications (e.g., HNC/HND, SVQ Level 3/4) which may have been achieved through an accredited apprenticeship, the post holder will have significant and proven technical abilities.

The role is customer-facing and the School is a diverse and international community of staff and students. The post holder will therefore have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a strong commitment to service delivery.

This role is full-time (35 hours per week), open-ended and available immediately.
