Foundation Year 3, Fellowship Post

Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Full time

An opportunity has come up through the Mental Health Mission (MHM Office of Life Sciences, UK Government), to fund an F3 post from October 2024. This post will be located in psychiatry, at the Nottingham Institute of Mental Health and Specialist Depression Service, aimed at developing clinical trials experience in mood disorders (including pharmacology, neuromodulation and digital/AI). The successful applicant would be mentored through early-stage training (including GCP and other mandatory areas), followed by clinical assessments, research screening and evaluation of interventions under close supervision of senior researchers. There will be an opportunity to develop an individual research project over the course of the year and to become involved in national meetings. Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have UK Foundation Competence. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in clinical trials research, or psychiatry and will be fully funded till August 2025 in the first instance.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will take an active role in routine screening and follow-up of participants in clinical trials, with appropriate supervision. The research activity will be based in the Nottingham mood disorders research clinic, which is split across three sites: the Nottingham Psychotherapy Unit, the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) and the NIHR Clinical Research Facility at Queens Medical Centre. The trials experience may encompass interventional work with novel or repurposed pharmaceutical agents neuromodulation and/or digital platform development (including automated mood monitoring) all aimed at enhancing the assessment and treatment of mood disorders. There is an active Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group attached to the Nottingham MHM that the postholder will have the opportunity to work with, to get first-hand understanding of the importance of this activity in helping to guide clinical trials. There will also be the opportunity to assist in the development of a new digital platform, creating a core dataset for 'difficult to treat depression', to understand this better across the UK. The post offers an unique chance to become part of an exciting new central government initiative that will link to other sites across the UK, to develop contacts in research and understand at first-hand how this works in practice. There will be no clinical work (beyond the research trials contact) and no expectation the postholder will take part in any on-call work.
