PayPal is seeking an experienced and dynamic lawyer with experience in payment services and technology to join our EU and UK Regulatory, Product and Corporate Governance Legal Team.

You will be based in the EU and will report into the Director, Merchant Legal. To succeed in this role, You should be mature, self-motivated, independent and well-organised with excellent interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills. An ability to work in a matrixed environment with multiple stakeholders is essential.

The Senior Counsel, Merchant will:

  • Be a subject matter expert in the area of Merchant Services, with a focus on PayPal's products targeting small and medium business.
  • Provide proactive, timely and business-focused legal advice on payment services regulation
  • Advise on the design and modification of products, proactively identify associated risks and recommend mitigation strategies, and review product user experiences to ensure legal compliance with applicable laws
  • Advise on the structuring of partner and merchant deals, proactively identify associated risks and recommend mitigation strategies
  • Participate in strategic projects and initiatives as needed arising out of PayPal's Merchant Business Unit

Job Requirements:

  • Admitted as a lawyer in a European jurisdiction, with at least 8 years' post-admission experience in a law firm or as in-house counsel
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment and matrixed organisation
  • Expertise in payments, financial services or fintech
  • Skilled at dealing with senior management and regulators
  • Capacity to take ownership of matters, knowing when to take decisions and when to escalate
  • Creative problem solver who remains calm under pressure and who can effectively prioritise
  • Highly resourceful and collaborative team player with the ability to manage team members directly or indirectly
  • Organised, with a keen attention for detail and an ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to work with colleagues in the United States and Asia and on occasion accommodate calls and deadlines aligned to their time zones
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and to tolerate change and ambiguity
  • A talent for drafting legal documents in clear and plain English
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: perfect English is a necessity, and other European languages may be useful
