About the role


An exciting opportunity for a confident, ambitious individual to join BEAM (formerly Hertford Theatre) as a Casual Technician to help relaunch the building after a 4-year hiatus and a 30m redevelopment.


This is an exciting time for you to join us and develop your career as we seek to strengthen and deepen the programme of films, theatre, live events and community work in our 550-seat theatre, 150-seat studio theatre, dance studio, community room and 3 dedicated cinemas.


The ambitious and highly professional team at BEAM are looking for a team of casual staff to join them who are committed to excellence in their work, ensuring the smooth delivery of a broad range of theatre, film and community events.

If successful, you will work across all technical aspects of the new operation to ensure the cultural and commercial success of the programme.

Within this new casual team, we are looking for staff with show operation experience.

Successful candidates will work ad hoc evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.

Candidates must be 18+.

Some of the key responsibilities of the Show Operation Role include:

  • To assist with the getins and getouts, including loading and unloading of vehicles.
  • To undertake lighting and sound tasks as necessary.
  • To have at least a basic understanding of electrical safety in temporary electrical installations.
  • To help build scenic elements of incoming shows and ensure current health and safety guidance is followed in discharging these duties.
  • To operate lighting and sound or fulfil stage duties for shows.
  • To promptly communicate any issues to the Deputy Technical Manager or Technical and Production Manager.
  • Maintain and clean the backstage areas of the theatre when necessary.
  • To help other departments with occasional manual labour.

About you


This role will suit persons, from an ambitious theatre-interested individual wanting to enter the industry, to a technical theatre professional keen to make their mark on a significant, new arts building in Hertfordshire.

The ideal person for the Show Operation Role will have:

  • Experience in Technical disciplines across a range of live events.
  • Experience in specific or multiple show operation disciplines.
  • Experience in technical work in a theatrical setting.
  • Experience in maintaining technical theatre equipment and stage engineering.
  • Ability to read lighting, sound and stage design plans.
  • Uptodate knowledge of Technical Theatre risk assessments and Health and Safety issues.
