Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery with a specialist interest in complex lower limb reconstruction (frames). Trauma & Orthopaedics at CUH has expanded; as well as being one of the country's largest Major Trauma Centres with daily complex, high energy and frailty trauma being looked after by renowned surgical teams; it is also expanding its elective orthopaedic capacity. The new Cambridge Movement Surgical Hub is the physical embodiment of the growing role within the region.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant would join a large team in one of the busiest Major Trauma Centres in the UK and would be expected to have the skills for treating the multiply-injured patient, open fractures and complex lower limb trauma alongside a multi-specialty trauma team. In addition, the applicant should have a particular interest in limb reconstruction techniques with an emphasis on frame based surgery and therefore contributing to bone infection and the trauma service, with experience at post-CCT Fellowship (or equivalent) level.

You will be fully registered with the GMC and have a CCT and appropriate higher subspecialist training, or be within six months of completion of Fellowship or equivalent at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

The applicant would take part in the on-call rota and would have a mixed role in trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery.

As part of our commitment to supporting the medical workforce in the part they play in delivering an excellent caring service to patients, all newly appointed Consultants attend our five-day Consultant Development programme within a year of joining the Trust. Leadership is a key requirement of doctors' professional work and this innovative programme is designed to support Consultants to hone the leadership and management skills they need to succeed at CUH.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is part of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ICB. It is a specialist centre for many services including trauma and orthopaedics, bone infection, major trauma, transplant surgery, molecular genetics, mitochondrial diseases to name but a few.

At the core of the hospital's ethos is a focus on high quality care adhering to the Trust values of 'Safe, Kind and Excellent'.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic department has expanded to over 25 consultants, with numerous trainees, senior and junior Clinical Fellows, specialist nurses and Allied Healthcare Professionals, looking after approximately 60 inpatients at any one time. It is closely allied to Cambridge University with musculoskeletal and trauma research ongoing, channelled through the work of four professors within the department.
