Job Description

Bail Supervision is a social work service whereby individuals who would otherwise be held on remand are released on bail on the condition that they meet with a bail supervisor a specified number of times per week; the aim of these meetings being to support the individual to comply with the conditions of their bail. The term bail supervision is not a legislative creation: rather the condition that an individual be placed under supervision is in and of itself a special condition of bail.

Bail supervision helps to minimise the numbers of individuals held on remand in custody pending trial or for reports after conviction who, subject to safeguards in respect of public protection, could be released on bail to the community pending their further court hearing. Providing bail supervision services orientated to the needs of the individual and the community can help ensure that remand is only used where necessary and appropriate.

The role of the Social Care Worker (Bail Team) is to compile bail assessments for court and to manage supervised bail orders. Bail assessments may include bail information to inform a bail address, a bail supervision assessment and / or an assessment regarding suitability of electronic monitoring as part of a bail order. The management of bail supervision orders includes assessing need and risk, utilising formal assessment tools such as the Justice Outcome Star, and then implementing care plans to address these needs / risks. This will involve direct one to one work with the individual as well as utilising existing statutory and voluntary sector services. Bail staff are also responsible for reporting back to the Courts in terms of progress and engagement and for submitting breach reports to Police in relation to any non-compliance with Bail Orders.

These posts are excepted under Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exclusions and Exceptions) (Scotland) Order 2013 (as amended).

Membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme will be essential on taking up appointment. Please note successful candidates for the above position will be required to pay for their PVG Membership/or Scheme Checks.
