Job Introduction

BBC Shropshire is looking for a journalist with sharp writing skills and a great broadcasting voice to present weekend news bulletins. The role involves preparing and reading radio and smart speaker bulletins at breakfast time and through the morning on Saturdays and Sundays. You'll also prep bulletin copy and breaking news stories for the Monday breakfast show. You'll be an organised, technically competent and self-reliant broadcast professional who is comfortable with lone working, as well as working well in a team. You'll be skilled at delivering complex news stories in a clear and conversational way. There may also be an opportunity for extra hours to cover our newsreaders who work on weekdays

Main Responsibilities

As a Journalist - weekend bulletin reader, you will:
  • Use a range of audio, video and digital equipment to write, assemble, edit and deliver output to the highest professional standards
  • Use excellent editorial judgement, and a sound knowledge of BBC values in order to develop stories and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
  • Liaise closely with team members in other areas of the BBC - particularly in online, regional TV and BBC Sounds - to ensure material is updated and shared.
  • Deliver to tight deadlines with the highest editorial standards.
Are you the right candidate?

The right person will be able to demonstrate:
  • Recent experience of live radio production and/or presenting news bulletins
  • Sound editorial and presentation decisions based on a thorough understanding of BBC news and current affairs, the BBC's values, and our local BBC Shropshire audience.
  • A thorough understanding of the law relating to journalism
  • Ability to use technology as required.
  • A passion for the BBC and local broadcasting, and the service we offer listeners.
  • Reliability, and a track record of working well on your own and under pressure
  • Teamwork - particularly working cooperatively in a large, and sometimes complex, organisation.
