South Hampstead High School, the Independent Girls' School of the Year 2022, is looking for a well-organised and capable technician to support the smooth running of the Design & Technology department.

As a technician, you will be responsible for the safe delivery of practical activities. This will involve ordering resources, upkeep, setting-up and clearing away equipment and materials, and mounting work for display, all whilst adhering to health and safety protocols in the department.

This is a rich and varied role, and you will be often called upon to assist in the production of complex and challenging work. Due to the extensive facilities on offer, you will be expected to become conversant with a broad range of specialist DT techniques, demonstrating confident technical instruction of specialist equipment.

We are looking for a highly motivated and well-qualified individual, who ideally possesses appropriate practical and technical skills training, as well as H&S DT certification in order to use all the workshop equipment (training can be organised for H&S certificates if required).

The Department

The Design Technology Department consists of three rooms and is situated on the ground and first floors of the main school building. There is a small departmental office with a workstation for each staff member.

The DT workshop is used mainly for 3D practical assignments using wood, plastics and a limited amount of metal work. It comprises of a general work area with machinery that includes two band saws, two belt sanders, a disc sander, two pillar drills and four fret saws, together with a variety of occasional use machines for specialist work. The technician's workstation is situated in a defined area of the workshop.

A second mixed use classroom on the second floor is largely used for digital work but with some scope for fabrication. This space includes a class set of widescreen PCs and an interactive white board, an A2 Laser Cutter, a vacuum former and two 3D printers. The space's fabrication equipment includes a pillar drill, belt sander, fret saw and hand tools.

The Textile Studio, shared with the art department, is equipped with a Digital Rowland Cutter, heat presses, a sublimation printer, a digital embroidery machine and a bank of 8 digital sewing machines.
