Sheffield, Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

Contract type: Fixed-term for 18 months, to start no later than 13th September 2024

Location: Sir Frederick Mappin Building, Mappin Street, Sheffield

Are you Interested in working for a world top 100 University? The Department of Mechanical Engineering, at The University of Sheffield, wishes to recruit a high calibre Post-Doctorate Research Associate to work on a very ambitious and challenging project in collaboration with the world leading teams from the EPSRC Future Electric Machine Manufacturing hub.

The project aims to develop the know-how and experimental skill sets to manufacture novel electric machines using advanced electrical materials.

In this varied and dynamic role, you will use your computational modelling skills (including but not limited to advanced Finite Element modelling) to support design and manufacture of new blanking tools, die sets and electric motor components. You will be responsible for developing a novel modelling technique for simulation of the cut-edge damage (mechanical and magnetic) due to the blanking and its effect on overall performance of the produced components. You will be leading modelling activities in the FEMM hub supporting other relevant projects and collaborating with other research teams located at other universities including Newcastle, Strathclyde, and Bristol universities developing a wide network of contacts at different sectors.

The project will provide you with great networking opportunities through various academic and industrial meetings with project partners within the Future Electric Machine Manufacturing hub. You will work in a well-connected team with world-leading reputations in the field of Manufacturing and Electrical Machines. We are well known internationally for our research, and you would have an opportunity to present your work in various conferences and seminar worldwide.

The successful candidate must have a good honours degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering and hold a PhD (or be close to the completion) in an area related to the core project aim. A proven track record of using modelling skills including finite element simulations, programming with one of the major platforms in the field (Python or Fortran) is essential while being familiar with blanking, forming and conventional machining processes and mechanical/microstructural characterisation methods is desirable. A high level of communication and team working skills are necessary along with an ability to develop creative solutions to problems. You will have the ability to take ownership over the project working with your line manager to deliver the challenging targets and develop your network of expertise with the internationally renowned research groups in the field of Manufacturing and Structural Integrity.

We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.

We're one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University's Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
