This exciting fully funded PhD, sponsored by EPSRC CDT Water Infrastructure and Resilience II (WIRe II), offers an enhanced stipend of £24,000 per annum with all fees covered. The project, titled "ViruISGE: Virus Research In Surface- and Ground watEr," focuses on optimizing chlorine contact tanks for effective virus removal in drinking water. The research will employ high-volume sampling and genomic techniques to assess viral presence and improve treatment processes.

The proposed PhD project, "ViruISGE: Virus Research In Surface- and Ground watEr," falls within the field of water and wastewater treatment, focusing on the significant public health risks posed by viruses in drinking water sources. As water quality issues and viral outbreaks become more prevalent due to environmental changes and urbanization, this research is highly relevant. Ensuring safe drinking water through effective virus removal is critical to public health, aligning with stringent EU regulations and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

The project aims to optimize chlorine contact tanks to improve virus removal in drinking water treatment processes. This will be achieved through high-volume virus monitoring, evaluating operational parameters, and understanding the impact of water chemistry on virus disinfection efficacy. The research will provide a comprehensive assessment of current disinfection practices, particularly in collaboration with UK water utilities, and propose strategies for mitigating viral risks to enhance the safety and reliability of drinking water.

Cranfield University, known for its excellence in water science and engineering, will host this PhD project in collaboration with the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Water Infrastructure and Resilience II (WIRe II). This initiative, supported by leading industrial partners, aims to produce innovative solutions to contemporary water resilience challenges. The academic supervisors, Dr. Francis Hassard and Dr. Peter Jarvis, bring extensive expertise in water treatment and virology, ensuring a robust research environment.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a minimum equivalent to a UK upper second class degree (2.1) and preferably an MSc in a relevant subject such as Environmental Engineering, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Science, Virology or related biological discipline or Chemical Engineering. It's desirable for candidates to hold a driving licence (incl. an international licence) as the role involves some field sampling around the UK.
