The Actuarial team covers both Reserving and Capital across all of Hiscox's extensive and varied portfolios. Hiscox writes business globally, operating three Syndicates at Lloyd's, a Bermudian reinsurance & ILS carrier and has rapidly expanding commercial and retail carriers in the UK, US and Europe.

Why work for us?

This exciting role will place you at the center of the business with the mission of building and improving the tool set available to actuaries for calculation and reporting. It will be an opportunity for you to build your technical skills in Tyche/SQL/R, and gain first-hand experience of the end-to-end development process, from design to delivery, putting you at the leading edge of actuarial development.

What makes Hiscox unique is that we are a large company with a small company feel. This means your role will involve regular interaction with the wider Actuarial team as we work side by side to deliver improvements.

The role

You will be a development analyst in the Actuarial Operations & Development team, working closely with the Reserving and Capital actuaries and analysts across the entire business.

The Actuarial Operations & Development team is responsible for the development of the Hiscox Internal Capital Model, Capital reporting tools and Reserving tools, data and systems. This includes building out improved methodology, automation and reporting for Capital and developing, testing & implementing changes to Reserving tools (both the Capital model and Reserving systems are built in Tyche), improving the performance & automation of current processes. This role gives the opportunity to be at the leading edge of actuarial development and build increasingly valuable technology skills.

  • Coding knowledge - Experience with and a genuine passion for coding and automation. Curiosity for the art of the possible and drive to continuously improve efficiency by automating processes and taking advantage of new technology
  • Problem-solving - Very strong analytical ability combined with a pragmatic and logical approach to independent problem-solving. This includes operating in a team where often objectives may be unclear and undefined, requiring you to use your own initiative to understand the problem as well as solve it
  • Communication - Confident communicator with an ability to communicate technical terms to a wider audience, combined with good interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Resilience & drive - You will need to be resilient in your approach with stakeholders and thrive in challenging situations. Self-motivated to drive forward change in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Support both actuarial teams with technical explanations of what each model/report is doing
  • Fix live issues in a timely manner, ensuring that all parties are communicated to throughout
  • Support the development for large project-based changes
  • Contribute to the implementation of performance improvements such as Tyche software upgrades
  • Contribute to the growth of intellectual capital within Group Actuarial through participation in professional development initiatives, and sharing of specialised expertise with other members of the team
Required qualifications & skills

A person in this position should meet the following requirements:

  • Experience of using R (popular with the team)
  • Experience of the following would also be beneficial:
    • technical provisions, such as Solvency II or BMA Economic Balance Sheet
    • independently managing small projects
    • process improvement
About Hiscox

As an international specialist insurer we are far removed from the world of mass market insurance products. Instead we are selective and focus on our key areas of expertise and strength - all of which is underpinned by a culture that encourages us to challenge convention and always look for a better way of doing things.

We insure the unique and the interesting. And we search for the same when it comes to talented people. Hiscox is full of smart, reliable human beings that look out for customers and each other. We believe in doing the right thing, making good and rebuilding when things go wrong. Everyone is encouraged to think creatively, challenge the status quo and look for solutions.

Scratch beneath the surface and you will find a business that is solid, but slightly contrary. We like to do things differently and constantly seek to evolve. We might have been around for a long time (our roots go back to 1901), but we are young in many ways, ambitious and going places.

Some people might say insurance is dull, but life at Hiscox is anything but. If that sounds good to you, get in touch.

Diversity and Hybrid working

At Hiscox we care about our people. We hire the best people for the job and we're committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success.

We have also learned over the past few years that working life doesn't always have to be in the office, and now it is safe to do so we have introduced hybrid working to encourage a healthy work life balance.

This hybrid working model is set by the team rather than the business to enable you to manage your own personal work-life balance. We see it as the best of both worlds; structure and sociability on one hand, and independence and flexibility on the other.
