Consultant Chemical Pathologist

Join our innovative team at North Bristol NHS Trust as a Consultant Chemical Pathologist. You will be an integral part of our dynamic Clinical Biochemistry department, contributing to the growth and strategic development of our services. Our department collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality care to our patients while fostering a supportive environment where every member can thrive.

In this role, you will focus on providing specialist services in chemical pathology, including leading the Adult Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IMD) service. Your responsibilities will include managing outpatient services, regular MDT meetings, and providing specialist advice and support for inpatient care. Additionally, you will participate in the development of other clinical services based on Trust priorities and available resources, with potential involvement in the North Bristol Obesity service, specialist lipid management clinics, and renal stone clinics.

The Department of Clinical Biochemistry at North Bristol NHS Trust has undergone significant redevelopment, including the establishment of Severn Pathology and state-of-the-art laboratories at Southmead Hospital. It provides a comprehensive 24/7 laboratory service and a range of specialist laboratory services, including Point of Care testing, Antenatal Screening, Clinical and Forensic Toxicology, the South West Regional Newborn Blood Spot Screening, and Metabolic Biochemistry laboratory, and the Cholinesterase Investigation Unit. The department handles an annual workload of 6 million tests and is accredited by the UK Accreditation Service (ISO15189).

As a Consultant Chemical Pathologist, you will join the senior management team for Clinical Biochemistry and Blood Sciences. You will work closely with the Clinical Biochemistry and Blood Sciences Management Teams to deliver an integrated, efficient, and cost-effective Laboratory Clinical Biochemistry and Blood Sciences Service. You will also be required to become Head of Department for Clinical Biochemistry on a rotational basis. Your role includes providing professional leadership to ensure the laboratory services are delivered to nationally accepted standards, maintaining UKAS Accreditation (ISO15189).

The role involves significant educational responsibilities, including professional supervision and management of junior medical staff, and active involvement in the department's educational activities for its own staff and a range of healthcare professionals. You will also play a lead role in clinical audit and research and development activities within the department.

Applicants must hold full Registration with the GMC and have the FRCPath qualification. They should have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Chemical Pathology or equivalent for non-UK trained applicants. Training in diagnosing and treating Inherited Metabolic Disorders is essential, alongside proven teaching experience and the ability to work successfully in teams. Knowledge of NHS management issues and the political context is also required.
