The Sustainable Design Studio helps individuals, SME’s and NGOs convert waste into something new by providing, training, machines and product design. Due to the growing demand for our equipment, we are looking for a Machine & Product Design Intern to work with out team to expand our lineup of machines and products.


The role will ideally suit a person who is currently studying Industrial Design or Product Design and is looking to gain valuable experience in a small and exciting startup. The role may also suit a person who is looking for their first position who has recently finished their studies.


We offer a 2-3 day working week, 10am to 6pm working hours (14-21 hour week), free parking and a pay rate of GBP £9.50-£15.00 per hour depending on experience plus holiday pay. There may be opportunities for overtime but this is not guaranteed. You will be reporting directly to the business owner and working within a small team of 4. The candidate needs to be able to work on their own initiative and be able to handle responsibility. However, a significant amount of onboarding and guidance will be provided to ensure all parties gain from the internship.


Working as a Machine & Product Designer, the primary duties will involve but are not limited to:

  • Designing new machines and products.
  • Creating comprehensive budgets and BOM's.
  • Constructing, fabricating and testing prototypes.
  • Preparing schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Sourcing parts and componants.
  • Creating step-by-step assembly instructions.
  • Improving and updating the user experience of current machine designs already on retail.
  • Designing recycled plastic products and moulds.

We require the successful individual to be PC literate and have good communication and numeracy skills. This role requires someone who is confident with using powertools, and working with a variety of heavy and fragile materials.


Due to the current software ecosystem employed at the Sustainable Design Studio the candidate must be proficient at Fusion 360 and have a good understanding of how to use Excel.
