About the role

The main function of the Engineering department is to produce mechanical and electrical design packages to enable successful installation, commissioning, operation and service of all forms of generation including gas powered generators, CHP plants, Diesel powered generation plants and energy storage systems (such as BESS systems). Role & Responsibilities:

We are seeking a highly motivated Software and Controls Engineer to come and join our Engineering team. You will support the Engineering and Service Department by providing software design, communication and application engineering for all forms of generation including gas powered generators, CHP plants, Diesel powered generation plants and energy storage systems (such as BESS systems). This will take place during all phases of the design, installation and commissioning. You will be working to develop software engineering solutions for emerging technologies, such as microgrids and renewables.


Responsibilities

• Translate and develop concepts into designs to meet the functional and contractual specifications of secured orders, developing and detailing specifications, producing calculations and making component selection.

• Ability to program small software changes in the INNIO Open Source Software to implement effective and efficient control algorithms as well as using third party hardware to implement full scale plant Balance of Plant control systems.

• When required, support and assist in the sales stage of a project by ensuring any conceptual designs and tender documents are produced on time and matching the quality standards required for that project.

• Liaise with the Electrical and Mechanical Departments to identify, from a Software & Controls perspective, what the project requirements are and advise on how best to implement them.

• Liaise with the Draughtsman to ensure that any design packages produced are on time and of the required quality.

• Liaise with the instrumentation Engineer to identify the correct meters and instrumentations to be used for specific projects, ensuring they integrate correctly with the rest of the project.

• Liaise as necessary with existing and potential customers and their representatives and ensure correspondence is professional and timely.

• Support with development and training of service & commissioning engineers with for use of the software and control systems used in the field.

• Develop knowledge of Modbus TCP/IP, Profibus, CANbus and other industrial communication protocols to facilitate commissioning on site.

• Provide remote assistance to on-site engineers and customers to resolve faults and help with the commissioning process.

• Help with the development and implementation of bespoke control systems such as master control panels for Mains-to-parallel, island mode and general Balance of Plant solutions in the power generation industry. Knowledge of BESS systems preferrable.

• Knowledge of networking, good understanding of the principles of VLAN’s, Firewalls, IP mapping and a strong appreciation for the fundamentals of cyber security design consideration.

• Experience in commissioning ancillary systems such as CCTV & Fire alarm systems

• Assist in the development of VBA administration programs to assist with the smooth running of the engineering department.

• Offer support and assistance where needed to project managers and project engineers during the design, installation and commissioning stages of a project assisting with the timely completion of any required documentation.

• Offer assistance to the electrical engineers when designing HV and LV breaker control and the considerations that must be taken. Some knowledge of protection relays preferrable.

• Site attendance is expected during the sales, site installation, commissioning phase and post commissioning stage of the project to help with commissioning and to resolve faults.

• Ensure that there is full adherence to Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality management policies and procedures in all work undertaken.

• Adhere to IEC standard 61131 and 62443 and ensure that when programming PLCs this standard and the cyber security considerations are followed.


About you:

You will be working to translate Functional Design Specifications and develop SCADA/DCS solutions to be used within the power generation and renewable power industry. In addition you will be designing and developing communication systems to meet the functional and contractual specifications of secured orders and supporting site based engineers to resolve issues on site with software, communication protocols and hardware faults, when required site visits to commission control systems and resolve faults.


Knowledge & Skills


Essential

• Degree in Electrical/Automation/Industrial Engineering (HNC/HND if supported by substantial relevant experience)

• Previous experience of working in an associated industry with a background in power generation (between 1-25MW)

• Knowledge of low and of medium voltage power trains and associated control and instrumentation.

• Good IT Skills -MS Office

• Knowledge of Electrical and power systems design, familiarity with NEC / IEC norms, EMC testing

• Experience with B&R Automation Studio, ComAp controllers and other PLC manufacturers. Knowledge of Structured Text, ladder logic and other programming languages preferred.

• Knowledge of Industrial fieldbus communication standards [ProfiBus/Net, EtherNET/IP, DeviceNET, Modbus RTU/TCP, IO-Link

• ComAp PC Suite experience [Inteliscada, inteliconfig, Intelimonitor, Genconfig, ICB Edit etc.]

• Applicant will be able to contribute in a global engineering community and will be registered to a relevant professional body


Desirable

• Professional registration.

• Experience in CHP, Power Generation sites and BESS technology

• Knowledge of Microsoft Project and AutoCAD draughting package or similar.

• Strong PLC/SCADA/DCS programming experience
