Hackett Associates Ltd are currently looking for a Legal Associate to join one of our most credible academic institutes. You will be enthusiastic and motivated with excellent communication skills whilst being responsible for assisting in intellectual property management and related contract drafting, negotiation and administration within the institution’s IP
exploitation team. You will play a central role in the efficient and effective operation of that team.
This is initially a FTC until July 2025 with the option to join permanently.
What you'll be doing
- Drafting IP related contracts including NDA’s, MTA’s, assignments, joint ownership agreements and licences. This will be the development of a suite of template agreements for the Commercialisation Team.
- Developing and implementing procedures for undertaking IP due diligence in relation to IP ownership through analysis of contracts (including funder’s IP ownership and exploitation rights) relating to specific inventions, technologies and disclosures.
- Promoting awareness of the importance of IP protection and exploitation and related impact.
- Delivering IP related and legal/contracts training events and in conjunction with the IP Manager, developing a programme and processes for training/advising academics on IP issues. Providing specialist advice, awareness workshops and training across the institution on all aspects of IP protection and commercialisation.
- Supporting academics and the institution’s legal office with IP-related aspects of funding applications.
- Advising academics on the management of IP related issues when engaging with new and existing partnerships or collaborations.
- Working with the IP Manager and other colleagues or stakeholders on request to develop legal resources and to develop and implement procedures for the optimisation of patenting, licensing and contract processes.
- Contributing to the decisions of the IP Commercialisation Managers on the most appropriate route for exploitation, and negotiating with potential licensees/assignees to facilitate the commercialisation of the institution’s IP.
- Helping to develop, implement and maintain effective IP and commercialisation contracts information systems to document identified IP through the invention disclosure process, and associated documents signed on behalf of the IP Commercialisation team.
- Supporting academics in submitting applications for funding (translational/industrial/POC) for IP development, liaising with external funding agencies regarding contractual obligations.
- Supporting other members of the IP Commercialisation team in delivering their objectives, assisting in the negotiation of disputed contractual clauses and disputes in relation to IP, or other contracts – including advising on risk mitigation associated with warranties and liabilities.
- Where appropriate representing the institution on external partnerships and liaising with companies and external bodies to promote the University’s profile and knowledge transfer activities.
