London Area, United Kingdom Flare Bright Full time

About Flare Bright:

Flare Bright is a rapidly growing software company of around 20 people based near Oxford & Bicester with an office in White City, London. We are leaders in developing Machine Learning & Digital Twin software for the Aerospace, Defence and Urban Air Mobility sectors. This role is a rare opportunity to join an expanding team with a professional, flexible, inclusive culture, great benefits and a successful track record.

The Role:

You will work closely with the CTO and Head of Engineering in order to balance existing and future software capabilities, bringing your technical know-how to help develop and maintain software engineering processes and compliance with industry standards at Flare Bright, to help nurture and grow Flare Bright’s young and dynamic software engineering team and to provide technical leadership on complex R&D projects where decisions can have a significant impact on project outcomes.

You will be responsible for a wide variety of software engineering, including machine learning, digital twins and embedded software in the complete operation of autonomous drones, from logistics, drone setup and testing, mission configuration, launch, asset monitoring, capture, data download, analysis, and data sharing. You will be expected to take on core engineering functions in addition to management duties, helping strengthen the technical depth of the software team in addition to leading it with your soft skills. This work will include software engineering using C++ on Linux for Machine Learning and Digital Twins, which operate on a range of drone assets, along with HTML5/JavaScript UI work as required.

Requirements:

You must be comfortable working within the defence industry. A Baseline Personnel Security Standard check will be undertaken before an offer is made, and you must be willing and eligible for (or already have) at least UK SC clearance. References will be checked.

  • 2.1 or higher Degree in Software Engineering or a related discipline which included programming.
  • At least 5 years professional experience of aerospace software development to a high standard.
  • At least 2 years experience leading and mentoring a team of developers.
  • In depth knowledge of software engineering best practices including design, change control, coding standards, documentation, code review, source control management, build processes, releases and testing.
  • Able to write well-structured, efficient, documented and tested software to high quality standards following coding conventions.
  • You must have a strong grasp of C++, real-time systems, event-driven execution, object oriented programming, formal design methods and test-driven development.
  • Experience developing to meet aerospace standards, such as DO178C or DO254.
  • Specific expertise in at least one of the following disciplines is required:
  • Machine Learning techniques, particularly reinforcement learning methods.
  • UI/UX tools and approaches, with coding experience in HTML5/JavaScript.
  • PNT techniques.
  • Additional knowledge of python/bash scripting is an advantage.
  • You must be willing to work as part of a team with good interpersonal skills.
  • Must not be subject to restrictions under any non-UK export laws (such as US ITAR)

A practical and theoretical knowledge test is part of the interview where understanding of C++ software systems and your specific area of expertise will be checked.

Location:

  • Hybrid working could be considered, but you will generally work in White City, London or our Head Office in Westcott Venture Park (15 minutes drive from Bicester or Aylesbury, 30 minute drive NE of Oxford).
  • This is not a purely remote position.

Benefits:

  • Opportunity to work in (and grow with) a rapidly growing company in a supportive and friendly team in professional facilities with flexibility and minimum bureaucracy
  • We provide a share options scheme for qualifying employees
  • 33 days annual holiday (including bank holidays), employee assistance programme, cycle to work scheme and support for Continuous Professional Development

To apply, send a 2 page CV plus a 1 page cover letter to careers@flarebright.com. Practical exercises will be conducted during the interviews. Failure to follow these requirements may result in your application being rejected
