Our Client


Our client is a well-established SME based in the Channel Islands, operating within the builders’ merchants and building products industries. With multiple branches and subsidiaries, the business is very successful and well positioned for growth.


The business has enjoyed growth both organically and through acquisitions, and the company is now looking to recruit a new high calibre Managing Director to lead one of their acquired businesses in Jersey.


The Role


The incoming Managing Director will be responsible for leading the company through a phase of positive transformation and sustainable growth. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic initiatives to drive profitability, enhance operational efficiency, and expand their market presence.


The ideal candidate will be an experienced and highly commercial business leader, with a successful track record of shaping and growing businesses in the building products industry. Reporting into the Group Director, this is a key appointment with full P&L responsibility, while also being responsible for enhancing and implementing the business strategy in line with company objectives.


This is a full-time position in Jersey.


Key Responsibilities


  • Develop and communicate a clear vision and strategy for the company's growth and development
  • Oversee financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
  • Rapidly become acquainted with the Group management style and operational philosophies; gaining a strong understanding of the product range, markets and customer base
  • Develop and implement an ambitious business growth strategy including new product lines and markets
  • Devise and implement demanding targets for improvement in market share, profit margin and customer satisfaction measures, without compromising quality
  • Build and maintain strong relationships to ensure communication and integration within Group
  • Develop strong and constructive relationships at a high level with existing and potential customers
  • Review existing systems, controls and organisational structures to identify, track and optimise conversion and pull through of contracts to support the realistic but ambitious growth plans
  • Build and maintain a growth-oriented customer focused culture with accountability, high commitment and team work as shared values.


Skills and Competencies Required


  • Degree educated, MBA preference
  • Strong commercial background in relevant field
  • 5-10 years senior management experience operating at strategic level within a comparable business
  • Proven senior management experience, preferably with a commercial or general management background within the building merchant’s industry
  • Strong commercial leader with P&L experience, with demonstrable track record of growing and developing a business
  • A charismatic leader who clearly demonstrates an ability to build, develop, empower and motivate a team
  • Exceptional skills in communication, motivation, and interpersonal relations, and able to convey a message that is understandable and relevant, linking business issues, financial results and strategy
  • Experience of operating at the highest level of professionalism and personal integrity
