Lead Development Chemist Position Overview: 

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Lead Development Chemist to pilot our growing chemistry team. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of synthetic chemistry principles, the ability to guide a small team of talented chemists and an awareness of commercial pressures. As the Lead Development Chemist, you will play a critical role in accelerating innovation, optimizing processes, ensuring high-quality standards for product development or manufacturing, as well as providing a coaching and supportive role to the team. This role is lab-based and will involve hands-on laboratory experimentation. 

 

Key Responsibilities of the Lead Development Chemist: 

 

Project Oversight & Execution

  • Oversee the execution and troubleshooting of chemistry-related projects, working with the Project Manager to ensure they meet technical, budgetary, and timeline requirements. 
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to the chemists on complex chemical processes, analysis, and synthesis. 
  • Develop and implement new experimental protocols, methodologies, and processes. 
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory standards, safety guidelines, and company policies. 

Leadership

  • Lead and mentor the group of chemists, fostering a collaborative and high-performance environment. 
  • Set clear goals for practical lab work to ensure individual and team success. 
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning, safety, and innovation within the team, in accordance with company values. 

Collaboration & Cross-Functional Communication

  • Collaborate with other teams, internally and externally, to align chemistry projects with business goals and customer needs. 
  • Provide technical support and insights during cross-functional meetings, project reviews, and decision-making processes. 
  • Act as a liaison between the chemistry team and senior leadership to communicate progress, challenges, and strategic recommendations. 

Documentation & Reporting

  • Ensure that all work is documented thoroughly, including experimental data, methodologies, and results, in compliance with internal/regulatory standards. 
  • Prepare and present regular reports, presentations, and technical summaries to stakeholders, management, and clients as required. 

 

The ideal Lead Development Chemist will have: 

 

  • A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Chemistry (or a related field) is preferred. 
  • Ideally a minimum of 3 years’ experience in an industrial setting e.g. as Senior Scientist, Team Leader or equivalent. 
  • Experience supporting a team and projects, according to stated goals. 
  • Detailed understanding of target oriented, multi-step, stereo-controlled organic synthesis and the development of synthetic chemistry libraries.

  • Experience with laboratory management and process optimization 
  • Proficiency with laboratory equipment, software, and analytical tools. 
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance (e.g. GLP, GMP, OSHA) and safety standards.
