Principal Engineer - AI and Digital Innovation in Banking - £200K package, Mostly remote (2x a month, with offices based around the UK)

We are partnered with a long-standing client who are committed to pushing the boundaries of technology, delivering cutting-edge solutions that enhance customer engagement and operational efficiency.


We are looking for a seasoned Principal Engineer to lead AI-driven technology solutions and influence the future of digital banking for our client. In this strategic role, you’ll balance technical leadership with hands-on engineering, driving the development and implementation of their AI platforms, including a sophisticated digital assistant serving millions of customers. You will guide multiple teams to deliver transformative technologies, setting new benchmarks in the industry.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and execution of their AI technology roadmap, ensuring they leverage generative AI to enhance customer interactions and achieve top-tier Net Promoter Scores (NPS).
  • Manage and guide engineering teams (circa 100 engineers - 3 direct reports) responsible for end-to-end product development, including design, build, and testing.
  • Ensure system stability, resilience, and seamless failover processes with minimal impact on live customers.
  • Oversee risk management for the AI platform, identifying and mitigating platform-related risks.
  • Drive continuous improvement in software engineering, facilitating team growth through mentorship, career development, and fostering an internal engineering community.


Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience leading large-scale engineering teams (size: 100+) with ability to continue to work hands-on.
  • Experience of running customer facing applications for millions of customers (ideally digital channels)
  • Experience working with AI/GenAI/Data Science or Data Engineering.
  • Expertise in defining technology strategy and implementing best practices for scalable, automated, and high-performing applications.
  • Hands-on experience with Cloud Technology stack, DevOps, Agile methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing frameworks.
