Nottingham, United Kingdom Gelion Full time

Battery Minerals Ltd, a subsidiary of Gelion, is focused on advancing and commercialising innovative Lithium-ion (Li-ion) recycling technology. With the growing volume of battery waste, this presents not only an environmental challenge but also an economic opportunity and a strategic advantage in achieving a self-sufficient supply of critical minerals. Our recycling process is designed to reduce costs, minimise waste and eCO2 emissions, and efficiently extract lithium from a wider range of battery scrap sources.

We are looking for a talented and driven Researcher to help develop pioneering research in novel recycling techniques for the extraction of lithium and other metals from battery waste. This role will be based in Nottingham, UK, commencing in January/February 2025.

This role offers a unique opportunity to join a newly established, small team at Battery Minerals, where you’ll act as an individual contributor, applying your expertise to shape the strategic direction of recycling technology. With the guidance and support of your team leader, you’ll have the autonomy and influence to drive impactful advancements in the recycling space. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, able to work independently, find agile solutions in dynamic settings, and is focused on achieving results. They also excel in a fast-paced, start-up environment.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct lab-based research in the extraction and separation of metals from battery waste, involving hydrometallurgical techniques.
  • Investigation of recycling methods for nickel manganese oxides, lithium iron phosphates, and other lithium battery chemistries.
  • Work closely with external partners, research institutions, and industry experts to stay abreast of advancements in the field and fulfil collaborations with partners.
  • Design and develop innovative chemical processes for the efficient extraction metals from battery waste.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimise and contemplate scale-up of novel extraction processes.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, documentation, and presentations summarising research findings, methodologies, and recommendations.
  • Effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Review, explain, and stay informed on scientific literature in the field of recycling and metals separation, ideally within the development of battery waste recycling.

Experience & Skills Required:

  • PhD and Postdoctoral experience of 1-2 years, or industry experience of 5+ years in a field related to metals extraction, preferably within the battery recycling sector.
  • Strong technical knowledge and familiarity with the specific technologies, equipment, and analysis associated with metals extraction.
  • Experience in start-ups and/or the battery industry is preferred.
  • Proven track record of working in a research laboratory at a postdoctoral level is preferred.
  • Proficiency with analytical techniques, including spectroscopy.
  • Ability to work independently and conduct research autonomously.
  • Strong skills in record-keeping, data management, and presenting research findings.
  • Experience in writing research or commercial grants is highly desirable.
  • A do-whatever-it-takes attitude, thriving in a fast-paced start-up environment, with the ability to deliver project outcomes on time.
  • May be required to perform duties outside of regular business hours.
  • In this role, you will be based in a laboratory environment at the University of Nottingham. Due to the nature of the position, remote work is not feasible.

Battery Minerals is supported by Gelion’s dynamic, engaged, and highly credentialed teams in the UK and Australia. This role is perfect for someone with a can-do attitude, growth mindset, and enthusiasm for contributing to a start-up environment.
