Ackerman Pierce is looking for a HCPC-registered Speech and Language Therapist with experience in supporting students with language disorders, ASD and social interaction needs to work with a client in Surrey.
Speech and language duties will include:
30 minutes per week SALT (combined with Occupational Therapy (OT)) totalling 24 hours per year (18 direct and six indirect support). This may take the form of, but is not limited to: classroom observation assessment and 2-1 or small-group activities based around communication and social skills. This will include attendance at internal and annual review meetings, liaison with teaching staff regarding the client's Individual Education Plan (IEP), assessment, report writing, target setting and training staff.
SALT will be fully embedded into the educational day. The placement will provide indirect and direct therapy with the SALT and OT working together and able to provide intensive interaction therapy.
Frequent and planned opportunities will be built into the client's educational day to develop his social communication skills through supported interaction with his peers. The client will be explicitly taught socially-appropriate behaviour and how to make social advances.
Staff will be experienced in the use of augmentative communication methods including Makaton.
Use of a Total Communication environment, including the use of routine, symbols, photographs, signing and gesture to support the client's understanding.
Hands-on activities as part of the everyday curriculum and out of school activities.
Use of Intensive Interaction and PEIC-D approaches to develop student's early play and communication skills.
Use of PECS starting at Phase I, for a range of motivators.
Staff will match symbols/photos to real objects/activities that the client enjoys, so that he learns which picture to use to request them.
Joint SALT/OT sessions to find motivators for PECS.
Minimum of half-termly observation/assessment from a specialist SALT.
SALT to provide advice regarding appropriate strategies to support client's communication.
This role is to be performed fully on site.
Salary: £65/h
What you'll need as a Speech Language Therapist - Post 16 Education:
Specialist knowledge acquired through degree or equivalent qualifications
Continued Professional Development evidenced by attendance at short specialist postgraduate courses to maintain and develop own specialist knowledge and expertise.
Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent (Post Graduate Diploma or MSc in Speech & Language Therapy leading to registration with HCPC)
HCPC Licence to Practice, Registered member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, Membership of relevant CEN
6 months of paid patient facing UK nursing experience from within the past 3 years
