About The Role

Walsall Football Club are offering an opportunity for an individual to join our Academy Staff as Head of Academy Education and Club Designated Safeguarding Officer.

This is an exciting new Full-Time dual role, which will work across two key areas.

As Head of Education you will be responsible for developing, planning, implementing and reviewing education across the Academy, to include development and tracking of the day release programme. While the Designated Safeguarding Officer role will be for 17.5 hours per week and will ensure that we are compliant in relation to all Safeguarding matters.

  • To oversee and manage all education related aspects for Academy players across all age groups.
  • To work closely with all members of staff as required to support all Academy players during their time with us.
  • Ensure that ALL education activity remains audit compliant and evidence is available and in place.
  • Develop links with key contacts at schools for Academy players and maintain appropriate lines of communication.
  • Ensure al schools are aware of player signing, release or any other issues that may impact on their progression.
  • To oversee the collection of all player school reports and review progression.
  • To complete player reviews in a detailed and timely fashion for all players.
  • To make sure all player assessments have been sent to schools.
  • To maintain/develop relationships with schools.
  • To ensure new school information / records are collated for players moving up to secondary schools.
  • Manage and oversee the day release programme in line with other key staff.
  • To ensure that we provide compensatory education as required to support day release provision - with a primary focus on Maths, English and Sciences
  • To liaise with schools over day release procedures (13,14,15,16)
  • To manage and deliver all education elements of day release
  • To track player progress within day release and across the wider Academy
  • To abide by and promote sound ethics and club policy, child protection, fair play and equal opportunities at all times.
  • To liaise with the LFE (and any other relevant stakeholders), to receive regular progression reports for each youth player (16-18).
  • To assist with supplementary tutoring with BTEC / SEP qualifications where required with scholars (16-18).
  • Ensure that any scholars involved with 1st team activity remain on track to complete their education.
  • To support PFA and HOC with planning, delivery and completions of UEFA C coaching licence for scholars.
  • Be aware of the club's Child Protection policy, Health and Safety policy and Emergency procedures and take responsibility for Health and Safety aspects at all times.
  • To attend any meetings with coaches, parent's and children where appropriate. - schools
  • To assume responsibility for development and care of materials , equipment and facilities.
  • To develop your own skills by attending CPD coach education courses and any in-service training that is organised by the club or LFE and remain vocationally up to date
  • Ensure that you are well briefed about any special needs of the participants involved i.e. medical condition/disabilities etc

Under EFL Regulation 117, each member club must have a Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO).

The Designated Safeguarding Officer shall:

  • report directly to (and be managed by the Club's Senior Safeguarding Manager);
  • in conjunction with the Senior Safeguarding Manager provide strategic leadership on safeguarding provision and issues within the Club;
  • review and approve the safeguarding provision for all activities;
  • liaise regularly with and be guided by the advice of the relevant local and statutory authorities and the League with regard to issues concerning the safeguarding of Children and Adults at Risk;
  • ensure strict compliance with the Club's policies and procedures for the safeguarding of Children and Adults at Risk;
  • promote awareness within the Club of safeguarding Children and Adults at Risk and encourage and monitor the adoption of best practice procedures in that regard;
  • report on a regular basis on the effectiveness of, and the Club's compliance with, its policies and procedures for the safeguarding of Children and Adults at Risk to the Senior Safeguarding Manager;
  • act as the lead Club Official in any investigation of an allegation of abuse of a Child or Adult at Risk;
  • maintain the single central record for the Club in such format as approved by the League;
  • be made known to all Staff, and (in the Employee Handbook) to Children and Adults at Risk (and their parents or carers) engaged in each Activity and to be available in person or by telephone to Staff and to such Children and Adults at Risk, their Parents and carers at all reasonable times;
  • provide written instructions to staff engaged in each activity in respect of good practice and what they are required to do if they detect any sign of abuse of Children and Adults at Risk, if they suspect such abuse is taking place or if they otherwise have concerns as to the welfare of a Child or Adult at Risk;
  • provide guidance to and support for any member of Staff engaged in each Activity who reports suspected abuse of a Child or Adult at risk or concerns as to their welfare; and
  • be responsible for maintaining clear, comprehensive and up-to-date electronic records of all allegations of abuse or poor practice and details of how such allegations are resolved and any decisions reached.

Furthermore, the Designated Safeguarding Officer will:

  • dedicate not less than 17.5 hours per week to the role of Designated Safeguarding Officer.
    The Designated Safeguarding Officer and Safeguarding Officer shall:
  • be trained in all issues affecting the safeguarding of Children and Adults at Risk; and
  • undertake in each football season continuing professional development in the safeguarding of Children and Adults at Risk, provided or approved by the League, and maintain a record thereof.
