Manchester, United Kingdom Equality and Human Rights Commission Full time

Deputy Chief Executive (DCE) for the Equality and Human Rights Commission

About us

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is Britain’s national equality body and a UN-accredited national human rights institution and an independent regulator, recognised as an authority on equality and human rights law, evidence and analysis.

Our job is to help make Britain a fairer and more inclusive place where no one is held back by discrimination or barriers to opportunity. We do this by safeguarding and enforcing the laws that protect people’s rights to fairness, dignity, and respect. We bring people together to create change. We work with employers, governments, and a wide range of organisations, to promote understanding of equality and human rights and support them to make improvements in practice.

The role

We are looking to recruit an experienced senior leader, to join us as our Deputy Chief Executive. Working closely with our Board, Chief Executive and Leadership team, the post holder will lead all of our regulatory activity across the Commission. They will inspire and motivate their teams to deliver some of our most complex and high-profile work, including but not limited to, developing our strategy, advising on policy and evidence, leading the delivery of enforcement, compliance and litigation activity, advising the Commission’s Board and Chief Executive on policy, regulatory and legal issues within our equality and human rights remit in England, Scotland and Wales.

As the Commission’s Deputy Chief Executive, they will provide leadership to the Commission, deputise for the Chief Executive as required, and will represent the Commission externally, promoting positive and productive relationships with a large range of diverse stakeholders, including Governments and our sponsor department.

What you will need

We are seeking an inspirational and impactful senior leader, with a successful track record of leading, developing and motivating multidisciplinary teams in a high profile and politically sensitive environment. They will need to demonstrate a commitment to equality, and an ability to enable others to deliver with impact and to engage positively with organisational change.

Candidates for this role are likely to have operated in an independent, impartial regulatory or policy environment, interpreting and applying a complex legal framework and delivering an integrated programme of work. They will have experience of using a range of powers, levers and interventions to achieve measurable impact, and of understanding and balancing the conflicting demands of a range of stakeholders. They will have excellent communication skills, and extensive experience of advising non-executives, Boards, Commissioners, Ministers, or their equivalent, using political nous and consensus building skills.

We welcome applications from everyone. To ensure we achieve a balanced representation on our senior leadership team, we are encouraging applications from those in minority protected characteristic groups. Our recruitment decisions are based on fair, open competition, with appointment on merit.

Location

We have offices in Manchester, London, Cardiff, and Glasgow. Our head office is Manchester and our preference is for the postholder to be based here. However, we may also consider applications for our London, Cardiff and Glasgow office. Wherever you are based you will be expected to spend a reasonable amount of time in each location.
