Academy assistant

London, United Kingdom Hachette UK Full time

Closing date: Thursday 13th June 2024

Salary: £28,750 per annum

Reporting to: Director of Faber Academy

Contract: The role is permanent, full time (35 hours a week)

Location: Based in our London office, with some evening and weekend shifts required.

Faber Academy is looking for an organised and motivated person with an interest in creative writing to join us as our new Academy Assistant.

Faber Academy is a busy and expanding creative writing school based within the prestigious independent publisher Faber. With courses currently taking place in London, Newcastle and online on our bespoke Learning Management System, as well as mentoring and manuscript assessment programmes, we have helped over ten thousand aspiring authors along their writing journeys.

The successful candidate will be ensuring the smooth running of the Academy: setting up the rooms for our classes and keeping them in good order the rest of the time, fielding enquiries from customers by phone and email, making sure our tutors have everything they need. You'll be facilitating online Zoom classes and uploading material to our online classrooms, and being ready to leap into action in case tutors or students experience technical difficulties.

This is a varied, hands-on role: you will be making coffee, setting up webinars, chatting to Academy students about their writing.

What we're looking for

  • You will know how to make writers feel at home and will be able to work independently to ensure that every student has an excellent experience.
  • You will have some experience of working in a customer-facing role, either in retail or in hospitality, and you will need to be confident taking phone calls and answering customer enquiries from the outset.
  • You will also have an interest in books and writing, and ideally some empathy with the travails of being an aspiring writer.

We’re a small team and our work is different every day, so you will need to be flexible, motivated and creative in how you approach the role.

Faber has a staff of just over 140, based across our offices in Hatton Garden (London) and Harlow. We want all our staff to have the best possible, most positive and enjoyable experience while working at Faber.

Our benefits include:

  • Access to Faber titles (including regular staff book clubs), discounted Independent Alliance titles
  • Minimum of 28 days’ holiday per year
  • Five days per year for volunteering work of your choice
  • Full subscription to the Headspace meditation app
  • Season-ticket loans
  • Cycle-to-work vouchers
  • Subsidised eye tests
  • Generous pension scheme
  • Life assurance and income protection insurance
  • Access to online GP and advisory services
  • Cash plan for healthcare costs
