The Principal Examiner has key responsibilities for the assessment of student work and the quality and consistency of qualification outcomes.

The Principal Examiner combines subject matter expertise with educational standards knowledge to influence marking and moderation so that it is carried out consistently and to the required standard.

A portion of the incumbent’s time will be allocated to End Point Assessment.

According to workload, some moderation work may also be required as part of the role.

This role involves the Principal Examiner’s regular interaction with the Academic Director, Head of Assessment, ICA Assessment operational staff, Markers, Moderators and Trainers.

Key responsibilities of the Principal Examiner role include:

  • End Point Assessment (EPA) work – assessment of EPA as required (approximately 20% allocation of time).
  • New marker and moderator onboarding, mentoring and continuous development.
  • Overseeing all markers and moderators and conducting marker and moderator evaluation.
  • Review (QA) of all assignment questions and liaison with the Training and Education team for any modifications.
  • Providing academic advice and guidance on the design, development, delivery, assessment, and quality assurance of qualifications.
  • Attending assessment operational meetings to provide advice and guidance on managing marking/moderation and related processes.
  • Other relevant duties related to learner assessment.

Accountabilities:

  • Advising on whether the assessments for a programme cover the learning outcomes and subject content sufficiently.
  • Working with assessment board members to achieve common and consistent application of marking through standardisation.
  • Checking of moderation work and reviewing cohort reports.
  • Overseeing academic malpractice issues and penalties.
  • Leading on marker training.
  • Reviewing cohort generic feedback.
  • Providing advice on Appeals, Mitigating Circumstances and Reasonable Adjustments.

In order to be successful in this role it’s essential that you have:

  • Practical experience in Compliance
  • First degree or equivalent qualifications related to the subject area e.g. Anti Money Laundering. Postgraduate qualifications and/or focused assessment qualifications are an advantage.
  • Experience of writing assessment materials in relevant subject areas
  • Experience of managing people.
  • Ability to make sound, impartial judgements about the quality of provision and learner performance.
  • Ability to be analytical and objective.
  • Effective and sensitive verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to provide constructive support and advice.
  • Excellent administrative skills
  • Ability to write reports to a high standard.
  • Ability to manage varied workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications

It would be great if you had:

  • Experience in the delivery of teaching/training in relevant subject areas
  • Sound understanding and experience of ICA assessment and QA processes and procedures.
