Job Summary The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for all aspects of maintenance to support the daily operation and future readiness of the FPT Portsmouth site. The role involves completing both preventative and reactive maintenance of machinery, equipment & infrastructure, including coordinating with external contractors where necessary. The Maintenance Engineer will also be responsible for completion of projects to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency whilst maintaining safety and machinery compliance. Responsibilities Machinery Maintenance : Conduct routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of production equipment, including older steam presses, electrical presses, welding machines, and autoclave ovens. Preventative Maintenance Programs : Develop and implement proactive maintenance schedules for machinery and infrastructure to reduce unplanned downtime. Breakdown Response & Troubleshooting : Quickly assess and resolve machinery breakdowns to minimize production interruptions. Contractor & Supplier Coordination : Manage relationships with external maintenance suppliers, ensuring timely and cost-effective servicing of specialized equipment. Compliance & Safety : Ensure all maintenance activities comply with health and safety regulations and industry standards. Energy Efficiency & Sustainability : Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste across the site. Inventory Management : Maintain an inventory of essential spare parts and consumables to support maintenance operations. Project Management : Lead and support improvement projects, including facility upgrades, equipment refurbishments, and new installations. Documentation & Reporting : Keep detailed records of maintenance activities, inspections, and compliance reports via the company CMMS system. Facility Maintenance & Upkeep : Ensure the integrity and maintenance of all building infrastructure, including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. Qualifications NVQ Level 3 / HNC / HND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Experience working with a mix of older and modern machinery, particularly steam presses, electrical presses, autoclaves, and welding equipment. Strong fault-finding abilities on electrical and mechanical systems. Familiarity with relevant safety regulations (e.g., PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, and confined space regulations). Problem-Solving Ability: Ability to troubleshoot issues effectively and implement practical solutions. Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal teams and external contractors. Experience with maintenance management systems (CMMS) and reporting tools. Desirable Experience Boiler & Steam System Maintenance knowledge. Experience with PLC-controlled machinery. Project management experience in facility upgrades. Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement exposure.
