Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to support the Autism Assessment Service within the Trust Community Paediatric Service for children (< 5years) with suspected Autism. This is a newly created post to support the redesigned assessment pathway. The post holder will work with the clinical team within the Trust and provide a link to wider agencies eg 0-19 service, SALT, OT, Portage, HINT Early Years Specialist Teachers, nursery settings. By providing effective and efficient child focused co-ordination of information and supporting with face to face clinical assessments it will enable children to be appropriately assessed with a diagnostic decision as soon as possible.

This is a permanent post and there are two posts available.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to gather and co-ordinate information about a child from referral from an established multi-agency meeting, through their journey with allied health professional and education services. By matching the information collated regarding each child’s developmental strengths, difficulties and progress against the DSM-V diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder this will reduce the face to face time required for assessment and add significantly improve the efficiency of the service with a resultant reduction in waiting times whilst maintaining a high standard of assessment. The post-holder will also work directly with the community paediatrician in the delivery of face to face assessments using their knowledge of pre-school child development and Autism to make highly reliable observations of a child’s presentation to inform diagnostic decision making.

The post holder will work closely with the Child Development Clinic Co-ordinator to ensure that the pathway is co-ordinated efficiently and effectively and patient pathways are actively tracked to support the delivery of RTT performance. The postholder will be expected to identify delays within the assessment pathway and work collaboratively to provide solutions for these.

The role does not require a professional registration and applicants are welcome from a variety of backgrounds but experience of working with children is essential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Work as a core member of the Autism Assessment Clinic team alongside the clinical team in all aspects of the patient pathway from referral to diagnosis.

Support the Child Development Clinic coordinator and clinical team to ensure smooth running of face to face clinic appointments and MDT meetings.

Ensure that documentation containing clinically relevant information from all involved services is prepared in advance of each child’s Autism Assessment Clinic appointment and any MDT meetings.


Engage with the child, and where appropriate their family, in the face to face clinic appointment to both ensure that the child’s comfort and safety is maintained and provide highly reliable and clinically relevant observations of the child’s play, interaction and behaviour so as to enable on the day diagnostic decision making by the paediatrician wherever possible.

Work closely with the clinical team, Child Development Clinic Co-ordinator and Trust transformation team to continuously improve the Autism Assessment Service.
