United Kingdom Locogen Full time

Remote UK or Hybrid working (Edinburgh).

Locogen is a renewable energy company. Our vision is a world powered 100% by renewables; where everyone has access to affordable, sustainable energy and clean air. Our work is innovative and varied across Wind, Solar PV, Battery Storage (BESS) and Hydrogen. We have grown significantly over the last year and have ambitious plans. There’s lots to do

We are looking for a Principal Electrical Engineer to join our growing Engineering team.

About our Principal Electrical Engineer role:

Our new Principal Electrical Engineer will play a core role in leading and supporting assessments and decision-making from the early stages of developments, through to managing grid connections and site commissioning. The role would suit an Electrical Engineer, with experience in renewable projects who enjoys writing technical specifications and is comfortable being the final technical sign off on electrical designs.

Ideally we would like you to grow and develop an internal electrical engineering team, although we have space for someone who wants to remain technical if you prefer.

Some of the things you may find yourself doing:

  • Writing technical specifications and employers’ requirements (and supporting others to write).
  • Reviewing detailed electrical designs and making suggestions for changes (e.g. single line diagrams, protection diagrams, cable sizing, earthing studies, SCADA and equipment specifications).
  • Managing QA and Signing off on specifications and design reviews. (As we grow our services this may include hi-level designs, but not detailed design).
  • Supporting in client conversations with stakeholders and managing technical queries from contractors.
  • Working with the team, providing technical input into electrical engineering FEED for renewable technologies and grid connection applications.
  • Liaising with network operator/contractor/client for the project’s grid connections at both distribution and transmission level, ensuring compliance with UK Grid Code and other regulations.
  • Advising and guiding clients on grid connection processes in the UK abroad. This would include transmission and distribution level.
  • Contributing knowledge of applicable electrical standards and best practice and of key electrical component specifications and current prices.
  • Managing internal and external technical specialists to deliver high quality deliverable projects.

The following experiences and qualifications are required:

  • A degree in electrical engineering.
  • Knowledge of grid code compliance.
  • Demonstrable experience of working on grid connected renewable energy projects.
  • Demonstrable experience working on voltages up to 275kV (400kV would be a bonus).
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant IEC / BS Standards including BS7671.

The following are desirable:

  • Chartered Member of IET / IEE or similar is very beneficial.
  • Undertaken the Owners Engineer role for utility scale renewable energy projects connected at both distribution and transmission.
  • Experience with BESS co-located projects.

What is it like to work at Locogen?:

This role can be based in our Stockbridge (Edinburgh) office or can be undertaken in a remote / hybrid capacity depending on where you live. The office is dog friendly, modernly kitted out and has free parking.

We are a multidisciplinary team of friendly, innovative, and creative people who are passionate about renewable energy. We are informal, non-hierarchical, inclusive, open, and collaborative. Locogen is a place where everyone can grow and develop supported by experienced people, doing innovative and interesting work.

We love what we do and believe in empowering and trusting each other to deliver. We learn from our experiences, take accountability, and hold others to account. We are client focused and inspire each other to do the best we can. We like a chat and value communication with each other and our clients. We are a social bunch so there is always something going on – we have regular organised socials and get togethers.

Some of our benefits:

  • Flexible working hours: core hours are 10am – 4pm - if you make up your weekly hours then we don’t mind how you manage your time.
  • 30 days holiday plus 4 company closure days (25 and 26 Dec, 1 and 2 Jan).
  • Work from anywhere up to 25 days in a year.
  • Discretionary Bonus
  • Ongoing professional and personal development opportunities – training, memberships and education costs covered.
  • Private Health insurance with vitality which includes perks for steps
  • Life Assurance, Critical Illness, and Income Protection options.
  • Pension at 10% (5% employee/ employer contribution split). We are flexible for employees who want to opt out or contribute more of their salary.
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity policies.
  • Cycle to Work & EV Car Scheme.
  • Dog friendly office
