This position for a Principal Highways Engineer within our civil engineering team will suit a committed and ambitious engineer who can demonstrate strong leadership and people skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play their part in growing a dynamic high-performance team.
With a focus on the design of large-scale infrastructure you will also support other Product Lines in the UK and overseas, the post-holder will be part of a growing team of UK engineers delivering projects for a diverse portfolio of UK clients.
The Principal Highway Engineer will be accountable for the design delivery of allocated civil engineering work packages, ensuring:
- Delivery of all the specified project outcomes on time, within budget and to the client’s specifications
- Project requirements are fully met
- Technically sound design solutions are produced, including all associated reporting and cost estimating, to programme and within budget
- Identifying and delivering solutions
- Compliance with all relevant technical standards
- Advice and guidance are provided for staff, and professional development is actively pursued
- Good relationships are maintained with all external parties to enhance the reputation of the company
Main Duties
Working in collaboration with our designers and contract partners, the Principal Highway Engineer will be involved in a variety of tasks such as:
- To work at any position within a project team to achieve the project objectives.
- Management of teams of engineers and external suppliers.
- Planning, monitoring, and reporting of project resources and finances.
- When required, to undertake the roles of Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE), Task Manager, Designer, Checker or Approver for all several types of civil design.
- Competent to work unsupervised and to supervise others; competent to check and approve the work of others; competent to sign off design certificates on behalf of the company.
- Conceptual outline and detailed design of engineering solutions, presentation of engineering options.
- Preparation, checking and/or approval of feasibility studies, outline and detailed design technical reports and other written documents.
- Design, checking and approval of detail allocation and construction design.
- Preparation of feasibility studies, preliminary through to detailed design for road and drainage infrastructure.
- Delivery of work to programme, budget, and specification.
- Training and development, mentoring of junior staff.
- Client and third-party liaison.
- Establishment of internal design standards and/or processes to achieve a continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
- Contributing to long term technical development of the office by application of new techniques, procedures, and practices.
- Consult with construction teams to ensure designs are buildable and represent value for money
- Consult with wider design team to ensure consistency and quality of deliverables across all projects.
- Implement effective, value for money and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements
- Ensure project requirements are effectively communicated to the team
- Prepare and check engineering designs, calculations, and oversee production
- Prepare and check contract documents and scheme cost estimates
- Prepare and check technical documents and reports and assist in the preparation of expressions of interest and tenders
- Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
- Develop a strong focused client relationship
- Project administration reporting to the Project Manager including monitoring programme delivery, resources, and budgets
- Effective management of and response to project related correspondence
- Acting as representative within the Technical Directorate and Production Centre’s in the wider SYSTRA Group,
- An important part of the role will include working with the resources across the project – from local resources to others based at other design Technical Centre’s.
