We are now recruiting for a Principal Systems Engineer to join our busy Engineering team in Stockport. As a Principal Systems Engineer, the solutions you will create are expected to support our railway products and meet our high reliability and safety targets for years to come. You will have an opportunity to work in many areas of the systems life cycle demonstrating your capability in many new and exciting projects. The role will include leading the development and / or improvement of tools and processes within the business including requirements capture, planning, specifications, design, implementation, testing and roll out. Assist in ensuring that tools and processes remain fit for purpose and enable continuous improvement of them by leading regular reviews and proactively suggesting and implementing improvements. In this role you will be expected to mentor and develop others as well as show an awareness of business operations in supporting the products you produce as well as existing solutions.
Roles & responsibilities include:`
Develop and review system design specifications, ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards.
Conduct system modeling, simulation, and analysis to optimise performance and reliability.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate signalling systems into overall railway infrastructure.
Lead or contribute to signalling projects, ensuring adherence to project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to gather requirements and provide regular project updates.
Support procurement activities, including technical evaluation of suppliers and equipment.
Provide technical expertise and guidance on solid state interlocking and signalling matters to internal teams and clients.
Act as a subject matter expert in meetings, workshops, and technical reviews.
Support the development of engineering standards and best practices.
Investigate and resolve complex technical issues related to railway signalling systems, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
Develop and implement maintenance strategies to optimise system performance and availability.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of maintenance processes and procedures.
Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations in a clear and concise manner.
Maintain accurate records of system design, modifications, and maintenance activities.
Support the preparation of project proposals, feasibility studies, and technical specifications.
Stay updated with the latest advancements in railway signalling technology, standards, and regulations.
Participate in relevant conferences, seminars, and training programs to enhance knowledge and skills.
Share acquired knowledge with colleagues and contribute to the development of the engineering team.
The successful candidate will have proven experience in the Railway Signalling Industry, with a working knowledge of Solid State Interlocking Systems. An in-depth knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations is also required along with a good level of knowledge of systems engineering principles.
Candidates should hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Systems Engineering, or a related field along with professional certification or accreditation in railway signalling (e.g., IRSE License). A Master's degree or Chartered Engineer status would be advantageous. In addition to the qualifications stated, we are looking for a team player who is enthusiastic about solving engineering problems and finding solutions whilst supporting the teams development.
