Grant Thornton Forensic & Investigation Services (FIS) supply a range of services to large corporates, lawyers and regulatory authorities. Our work falls broadly into the following areas: investigations, disputes, digital forensics, financial crime and competition services and monitoring.

As a service line within FIS, the Financial Crime team helps clients of all shapes and sizes by providing the advice they need to navigate complex financial crime risks and challenges. Our work is varied and includes:

  • Reviewing a firm’s financial crime framework (or specific elements within it) to assess business risk and regulatory compliance
  • Providing training to raise awareness and update a firm’s knowledge repository
  • Internal systems reviews – combining internal audit and industry insight to report on financial crime and fraud control design and effectiveness
  • Helping a firm to scope and carry out remediation activities in relation to core financial crime process (such as KYC, CDD/EDD, screening)
  • Conducting investigations on behalf of a firm and providing recommendations to help them determine appropriate next steps
  • Supporting an organisation’s response to identified regulatory breaches, such as sanctions breaches or instances of money laundering, bribery or corruption

A look into the role


As a Financial Crime Associate Director within our Forensic & Investigations services team, you will:

  • Contribute to the strategic planning of business development activities, and lead specific opportunity related activities e.g. preparing proposals/bids, presenting at pitch meetings, organising conferences/client events, developing marketing materials.
  • Utilise and actively grow your network of contacts, attend, and present at, external networking events to support our brand awareness and market presence.
  • Manage the end-to-end delivery of assignments including delegation of tasks, coaching junior team members, responsibility for timelines and budget, identifying risks and issues with escalation to Partner/Director as appropriate.
  • Build trusted relationships with client employees and stakeholders, manage client expectations, and manage the day-to day aspects of engagement delivery under Director/Partner supervision.
  • Ensure project teams keep organised records of work done and conclusions reached and that assignment files adhere to firm quality and risk management guidelines.
  • Display judgement and an understanding of relevant risks and issues arising in an assignment, offering potential solutions and seeking advice when necessary.
  • Work effectively with all members of the team, building respect of peers and junior team members.
  • Mentor and coach junior team members; appraise them giving regular feedback, complete timely performance reviews and provide development opportunities.
  • Actively seek opportunities to develop own technical and consultancy skills, attend workshops, keep technical knowledge up to date, identify and complete relevant grade-appropriate in-house training opportunities, and keep records for CPD purposes (where required).
  • Ensure compliance with internal quality and risk procedures including the completion of take-on, conflict checking and setting up charge codes.
  • Have a good knowledge of technical matters relevant to Financial Crime, including MLR2017, CFA2017, BA2010, JMLSG, and FATF guidance.

Knowing you’re right for us

Joining us as a Financial Crime Associate Director, the minimum criteria you’ll need is relevant experience within financial crime that includes consultancy experience.

It would be great if you had some of the following skills, but don’t worry if you don’t tick every box, we’ll help you develop along the way.

  • Financial crime professional qualification e.g. ICA, ACAMS, CISI, ACFE
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, primarily Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Strong technical knowledge of the UK financial crime regulatory regime (across AML, ABC, sanctions, terrorist financing, fraud) and an awareness of current developments and issues.
  • Have commercial awareness of client issues particularly within the regulated sector.
  • Experience leading teams to deliver work and be comfortable working independently and taking initiative. You should be focused on self-development as well as having the desire to coach, mentor and develop your colleagues.
