Job Title: Metrology Engineer
Shifts: Days, Monday-Friday (8am-4pm), Flexibility Required
Direct Report: Technical Manager, Pattern-Shop Supervisor
Job Description:
- Metrology is now a fast pace and evolving role. Working within the technical team and with inspection and quality departments.
- Integral aspect of our overall inspection strategy and processes that supports the production processes. - - Ensuring we maintain capability in our tooling and equipment for our manufacturing processes.
- Assist with product audits and product improvement.
- Trained employee who ensures manufactured products meet requirements to drawing using tools and guidelines.
- They inspect and verify product quality, ensuring it meets standards before reaching the customer.
- Responsible to inspect cast ductile iron and steel castings for turbo/manifold and general engineering sectors to maintain the company's high-quality standards.
Job Requirements:
- Hands on experience using metrology equipment, 3D scanning and 3D software.
- Advantageous experience including: CMMs, inspection, measuring instruments, vision systems, hardness testers, portable measuring arms, gauging, optical measurement equipment, dimensional equipment
- The ideal candidate will possess a trained eye for detail and will be reliable and committed. In depth knowledge and comprehension of quality standards
- Experience in machining is an advantage. Well organised and thorough. Methodical and analytical
Confident using a calculator
- Excellent communication skills and active time management are essential to deal with customers and achieving project deadlines.
- Experience and knowledge with production processes associated with the manufacture of ductile iron turbine castings is preferred, but not essential.
- As a priority, working safely with tools and equipment with an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement.
- The role requires an attention to detail, thoroughness, and a degree of analytical thinking or problem solving.
- Ability to read and follow inspection references, work instructions and quality documents relevant to customer and internal requirements.
- Good written skills to record inspection information.
Essential Functions of the position:
- Competent to perform Dimensional Metrology - measures sizes and distances over an object's surface. It is used to quantify an object's physical form, size, volume, and relational distances between distinct features. Dimensional metrology is vital in developing standardized measurement units like the metric system.
- To ensure all castings are inspected according to company procedures and customer requirements
- Approving or rejecting both raw and machined castings with respect to quality standards and record performance
- Complete a programme for parts to ensure they are measured at each drawing revision.
- Develop measurement programmes for all parts. Analysis and Reporting
- Customer Liaison: * Supporting customer quality representatives on projects
- Operate CAD software
- Read engineering drawings
- Complete gauge checks. Utilise measuring equipment such as gauges or jigs when required.
- Assist in projects for reverse engineering thoroughly examine an object and determines its physical characteristics to duplicate them.
- Ensuring that the final product meets contractual requirements, ideal specifications, and internal quality standards.
- Collect and perform statistical analysis on metrology data to correlate to performance metrics.
- Participate in the creation of manufacturing process and equipment qualification validation plans, validation protocols and reports, and their implementation.
- Initiate and follow up of Non-conformance.
- Extraordinary projects as directed by quality management.
- Ability to work in a high-paced environment.
- Maintains a clean work environment to eliminate potential product contamination.
- Complete required paperwork. Ability to read and write the English language
- Ability to safely lift 25kgs and handle castings
- Follow and adhere to manual handling and lifting guidance
- Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be always worn in proper manner.
- Flexible; Ability to work varying shifts and overtime.
- Good communication skills and teamwork
- Maintaining general housekeeping, cleanliness and tidy working areas
- Safe handling of waste and spillages
- Following pre-use checks and shutdown processes. Maintain equipment in safe working condition.
- Checking inspection equipment before use and reporting any concerns
- Promote ideas to optimise inspection productivity.
- Adopt long-term goals of AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning will be integrated into metrological procedures.
- Participate in the development and improvement of inspection practices and procedures.
- Participate and feedback concerns with design and development of cast products, materials, testing and process studies
- To follow and read work instructions, standards, and care points carefully.
- Reporting concerns which relate to increased processing time and reduce output
- To communicate with team members and supervision to ensure the area is working efficiently.
