Working Days and Hours:
37.5 hours per week; shift times will be:
7am to 11pm on rota
Monday - Friday; 24/7 rota due to be implemented
Pay Rates:
Monday to Friday any hours worked from 6am to 8pm: £20.00 paye inclusive of holiday per hour
Monday to Friday any hours worked from 8pm to 6am: £26.00 paye inclusive of holiday per hour
Job Purpose:
As a Senior/Diagnostic Vehicle Technician, you will be responsible for the efficient maintenance and repair of our fleet of vehicles, ensuring they remain in a safe and operational condition to support the high-paced delivery of 24/7 healthcare services.
You will utilise your advanced technical skills and expertise to maximise vehicle availability by independently diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving complex mechanical and electrical issues across a range of vehicles, including ambulances, patient transport vehicles, and administrative vehicles.

Key Responsibilities of the Role
Conduct comprehensive inspections and diagnostics on a variety of vehicles to identify faults and malfunctions.
Perform advanced mechanical, electrical, and electronic repairs, including engine and transmission overhauls, brake system repairs, and diagnostic troubleshooting, using specialised equipment.
Utilise diagnostic software and tools to analyse vehicle systems and interpret fault codes.
Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks, including servicing, oil changes, and component replacements, in accordance with manufacturer specifications and Health & Safety Regulations.
Provide technical guidance and support to junior technicians and apprentices, sharing knowledge and best practices to enhance Team performance as required.
Ensure compliance with Health & Safety Regulations and maintain a clean and organised work environment.
Liaise with external suppliers and contractors for the procurement of parts and equipment, ensuring cost-effective solutions and timely repairs.
Keep accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts usage, labour hours, and vehicle histories.
Participate in training and development opportunities to stay abreast of new technologies and industry best practices.
Mentor, support and guide apprentices and Vehicle Technicians as required.
The post holder will be required to use diagnostic tools to identify problems with various vehicle systems. This includes issues with engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, and electrical systems.
Carry out MOT inspections/repairs as required.
Communicate with clinical and operational users to gain a full understanding of the nature of fault or problem with the vehicle and equipment. Assess the seriousness of the issues and implications and respond appropriately to the urgency of the requests.
To provide clear, concise and factual information to support the vehicle equipment processes which may assist with the following: Purchasing, Maintenance, Repair and Service Reports.
Communicate and provide technical information to non-technical staff at all levels, both internal and external.
To carry out mechanical/welding repairs as and when required.
To frequently organise and plan a complex range of activities based on the maintenance of vehicles and equipment, some of which will impact other Departments or Services across the Trust.
Responsible for the safe working practices undertaken when dealing with motor vehicle air conditioning systems.
Responsible for full utilisation of the computerised diagnostic equipment available to specific vehicle applications, to be responsible for diagnosing vehicle faults and fault-finding process.
Analyse diagnostic data, interpret error codes, and perform tests to pinpoint the root cause of problems. You will need to have a combination of technical knowledge, experience, and problem-solving skills.
The post holder will be required to identify problems and faults, then carry out the necessary repairs or replacements. This will involve tasks such as replacing faulty components, repairing wiring, adjusting engine timing, or recalibrating sensors.
Adhere to relevant policies, legislation, and standards, and propose changes to working practices, including the use of diagnostic systems/software, equipment, and reporting methods.
To carry out repair and maintenance to special applications on vehicles operated by the Trust.
Inform Workshop Manager in a timely manner, as appropriate, in cases of unplanned failures, events not previously experienced and unusual events.
Complete all necessary documentation, including Job Cards, Service Sheets and Parts Sheets and ensure all are submitted in a timely manner.
Ordering/receiving of parts from external suppliers, use of online mechanical ordering, and understanding of vehicle service and repair manuals.
Maintain security of stock and equipment used.
Keep workshops and equipment clean and tidy, reporting equipment failures, ensuring full and accurate information is provided at all times and copies of all reports made are filed for future use or reference.
Account for all stores and equipment used by means of booking out of parts onto Job Cards.
Responsible for ensuring that service centre equipment, portable equipment and hand tools are fully checked and maintained in line with Trust Policy to meet Health & Safety Requirements.

Ensuring high standards of dexterity, coordination and sensory skills are used on a daily basis while using precision tools to maintain delicate and expensive vehicles and equipment, and maintaining frequent prolonged concentration during planned maintenance and fault finding on highly complex vehicle systems.
Responsible for maintaining compliance with all Statutory Requirements relating to the disposal of waste produced as a result of the activities of the vehicle. This includes waste oil, oil filters, brake fluid, batteries, waste paint products, etc.
Includes direct exposure to dirt, dust, grease, smell, noise, chemicals and solvents, exhaust fumes, hot engines, manual lifting of weight up 25kg is required, risk of being in the vicinity of body fluids, foul linen sometimes found in the ambulance saloon.
All post holders have a responsibility to report risks such as clinical and non-clinical accidents or incidents promptly. They are expected to be familiar with the Trust’s use of Risk Assessments to predict and control risk, as well as the Incident Reporting System for learning from mistakes and near misses in order to improve services.
The post holder will need to maintain detailed records of diagnostic findings, repairs performed, and parts replaced. This documentation is important for tracking the history of the vehicle and providing a reference for future maintenance.
Post holders must also attend training identified by their manager or stated by the Trust to be mandatory.
All staff are responsible for undertaking scene specific or activity specific Risk Assessments for non-EEAST premises and reporting identified problems to their Line Manager for consideration and resolution.
Continuous learning is an expectation of the role and the achievement of higher-level qualifications to support and enhance mechanical knowledge.
It is essential to this role to stay up to date with advancements in automotive technology, including new diagnostic techniques, tools, and software. This ongoing learning helps to stay proficient in their role and adapt to changes in the industry.
The post holder will be required to take part in all Trust training, including, but not limited to, Stryker Training, Bosch Technician Training, Ferno Training, Jactone Training, Health & Safety Training, VB Suspension Training.
To supervise, instruct and provide guidance, support and direction to apprentices, semi-skilled staff/new employees, as required.
Essential Qualifications
* NVQ level 3 or equivalent in vehicle maintenance and repair
* Knowledge of procedures for mechanical/electrical maintenance and repair to BTEC/HNC, or City and Guilds, plus relevant training or equivalent
* The post holder will have extensive, specialist knowledge and experience of safety practices and techniques in motor vehicle repair.
* Driving Licence with C1/D1 categories, courses, significant experience of driving vehicles larger than a family saloon car.
