JOB DESCRIPTION
 
Post:  Assistant Headteacher: Curriculum and Learning
Responsible to:  Headteacher
 
Job Purpose
To play a major role under the direction of the Headteacher in formulating the aims and objectives of the school, establishing the policies through which they shall be achieved, managing staff and resources to raise standards and monitoring progress toward their achievement. Lead strategic areas of whole-school provision, which are likely to include the following:
Academic pupil progress data
Assessment
Curriculum planning and/or development
Pupil interventions
Reporting to parents/carers
Oversight of the EHCP and annual review process 
Core Purpose and Accountabilities
In partnership with the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership team, provide professional leadership and management of teaching and learning throughout the school.
Actively participate in achieving and promoting a healthy and safe school environment for all including implementation of safeguarding procedures and the wellbeing of staff.
Take an active role in the school leadership team, contributing to the development of identified areas leading to high standards of teaching.
Keep up to date with national strategies, reviews and research relating to curriculum and learning, attend relevant training and lead in implementing effective CPD for all in these areas.
Provide professional leadership and management of the School Development Plan priorities including responsibility for leading on a specified area of development.
Provide professional leadership and management of the curriculum and have responsibility for a particular curriculum area.
Identify and pursue leadership and management development opportunities in agreement with the Headteacher.
Model and embed high standards of behaviour through the implementation of policy and practice for others to follow.
Uphold and promote the school’s aims and values. 
Teacher Responsibilities
Carry out duties of a school teacher as set out in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document in accordance with Teacher Standards.
Facilitate and encourage learning which enable students to achieve high standards.
Share and support responsibility for well being, education and discipline of all children.
Model and uphold he school’s principles and policies which underpin good practice and the raising of standards.
Develop a culture of working together as part of a team which impacts positively on learning and teaching across the school.
Take an active role in the School Self Evaluation process and inform school improvement.
Strategic Direction
Assist in the ongoing and annual review of standards of leadership, teaching and learning in specific areas of responsibility and across all areas of school provision.
Ensure that practice is consistent with the procedures in the school self-evaluation policy.
Support the development and implementation of policies and practices for the subject/areas(s) which reflect the school’s commitment to high achievement and is consistent with national and local strategies and policies.
Contribute to the development of short, medium and long term plans for resourcing of specific areas responsibility, including the use of Pupil Premium to have maximum impact on progress.
Monitor the progress made achieving subject/area plans and targets, and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning to inform school improvement.
Work with outside agencies and stakeholders, including other schools, to inform future action and improvement. 
Leading Teaching and Learning
Undertake a curriculum review to support the continued development of an appropriate curriculum which covers academic, vocational, social and personal needs.
Develop and enhance the teaching practice of others across the school
Work with the Headteacher to raise the quality of teaching and learning and to raise pupils’ achievement by setting high standards of expectation.
Monitor and evaluating effectiveness of teaching practice on learning outcomes.
Provide regular feedback for colleagues in a way which recognises good practice and supports their progress against professional and performance management objectives resulting in a tangible impact on pupils’
Plan, organise and lead staff meetings and development sessions.
Plan, delegate and evaluate work carried out by others and individuals.
Create, maintain and enhance effective relations with others.
Ensure that pupils enjoy and benefit form a high quality educational experience. 
Securing Accountability
In conduction with SLT:
Ensure the school’s accountability to a wide range of groups, particularly colleagues, pupils, parents, carers, governors, Ofsted/HMI and the DfE and promote collective responsibility within the whole school community.
Work with others to develop a school ethos which enables everyone to work collaboratively, share knowledge and understanding, celebrate success and accept responsibility for outcomes.
Work with the Governing Body/Trust to provide information, objective advice and support to enable the Governing Body/Trust to meet its’
Develop and present a coherent understanding and accurate account of the school’s performance to a range of audiences including governors parents and carers.
Reflect on personal contribution to school achievement and take account of feedback for others.
Agree objectives and evaluate the subject pupil progress targets to make a measurable contribution to whole school targets in conjunction with the Senior Leadership team.
Engage all staff in the creation, consistent implementation and improvement of schemes of work and curriculum plans which encapsulate the school learning strategies..
Monitor, evaluate and utilise systems for recording individual pupils progress.
Analyse pupil progress data to inform teacher development and to measure the impact of teacher performance including holding others to account for the impact of the use pupil premium funding.
Evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of achievement setting targets for improvement. 
Resource management
Work with a Headteacher and others to:
Provide effective organisation and management of the school and seek ways to improve organisational structures and functions based on rigorous self-evaluation.
Ensure that people and school resources are organised and managed to provide an effective, efficient and safe learning environment.
Evaluate the subject area budget allocation to ensure the budget is spent in line with learning priorities and Best Value principles.
Monitor and control the use of resources in budget according to the school agreed financial procedures.
Recruit and select teaching and support staff in accordance with school policy and procedure. 
 
Developing self and working with others
Work with the Headteacher to build a professional learning community which enables others to achieve.
Support staff within your team and within the whole school in achieving high standards through effective continuing professional development.
Implement successful performance management processes with allocated team of staff in accordance with school policy.
Treat people fairly and equitably and with dignity and respect to create and maintain a positive school culture.
Promote a collaborative learning culture within the school and actively engage with others to build effective learning communities.
Acknowledge the responsibilities and celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams.
Develop and maintain a culture of high expectations of self and others.
Regularly review own practice, set personal targets and take responsibility for own professional development. 
Performance Management
Provide guidance on a choice of teaching and learning methods and strategies including; exemplifying good practice and acting as model for others, coaching and mentoring of colleagues, sharing best practice.
Play a significant role in the Appraisal process for teachers and support staff as appropriate.
Set and agree targets in line with school development plan priorities and implement effective systems of monitoring and review with colleagues.
Contribute to the professional development of self and others through keeping abreast of the latest developments including, coaching and mentoring, self-evaluation and peer review.
Develop whole staff, phase teams and individuals to enhance performance through a range of technics and methods including coach and mentoring.
Support the professional development of all staff to directly impact on the raising of standards throughout the school. 
 
Strengthening the Whole School Community
Work with the Headteacher and others to:
Engage with the internal and external school community to secure equity and entitlement.
Collaborate with other schools and organisations in order to share expertise in bring positive benefits to their own and other schools.
Collaborative at strategic and operational levels with parents and carers and across multiple agencies for the well-being of all children.
Promote the school’s values in all that you do.

Person Specification - 
•   Qualified Teacher status
•   Evidence of further study, action research or significant levels of curriculum development /in service /other training and /or school improvement.
Experience 
•   At least 5 years recent and successful teaching experience in a school setting.
•   At least 2 years experience in a special school
•   Evidence of positive impact over time, in whole-school leadership priorities, within the past three years.
•   Previous whole-school responsibilities involving one of more of the following: • Academic pupil progress data • Assessment • Curriculum planning and/or development • Pupil interventions • Reporting to parents
•   Experience of contributing to school improvement through performance management, staff development and as a member of the leadership team.
•   A proven record of successfully leading and managing change in pursuit of strategic objectives.
•   Experience of using assessment data to track and analyse pupil progress and set targets for improvement.
•   A proven track record of raising attainment.
•   An up to date knowledge of the secondary curriculum, and how it fits into a student’s journey from primary school to adulthood.
•   Experience in leading and implementing adaptive teaching strategies for students with additional needs
•   Experience of coaching and mentoring colleagues in order to secure school improvement.
•   Experience of initiating /implementing strategies to work in partnership with parents and the community.
Practical skills
 
•   Outstanding practitioner with ability to raise and maintain high standards.
•   Have a positive attitude to challenge and change, with the ability to successfully lead and manage it.
•   Ability to think strategically and maintain attention to detail
•   Excellent interpersonal skills including being able to listen and respond sensitively to both children and adults.
•   To have a calm approach to behaviour management
•   Ability to set clear targets and to monitor, evaluate and assess specific aspects of school life
•   Ability to prioritise effectively and maintain a sense of humour when working under pressure
