NIRAS is a multi-disciplinary engineering and environment consultancy, fundamentally committed to sustainable progress and service delivery across a wide range of sectors, and have an expanding international presence with approx. 2600 employees globally in 59 offices in over 20 countries. Our UK operations are growing rapidly, with over 250 professional staff providing process engineering, civil engineering, energy, environmental, international development consultancy, and project management services to a variety of clients.


Due to the exciting expansion of our UK operations, NIRAS are looking to appoint a Senior H&S Manager to further grow our UK capabilities. The ideal candidate will be business-oriented, attentive to detail, and able to apply their H&S expertise across diverse projects. This is a real opportunity to help shape best practice as we grow our UK operations.


This role may suit someone currently operating as a Senior Health and Safety Manager, H&S Manager, QHSE Manager, Group H&S Lead, or a similar position to these.



About the job


We are recruiting for an ambitious individual to align, facilitate and support the implementation of Health & Safety policies, procedures, and practices across the UK business and future acquisition business units.


As the Health & Safety professional expert for all Health & Safety topics, you will be the lead advice for the company on current policies/legislation and how these may impact the Niras Group Business, and drive through any change in the business required to achieve this.


Key duties include:


Risk Management and Compliance:

  • Advise on financial and legal risks, particularly those beyond the company's control.
  • Oversee risk assessments and method statements (RAMs) for staff, especially in offshore and construction settings.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, including the CDM 2015 Regulations and the Building Safety Act 2022.
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 45001, Safe Contractor certifications, and the company’s Integrated Management System (IMS).


Health & Safety Training and Auditing:

  • Develop and deliver induction and ongoing training on health and safety policies, ensuring staff understand and comply with them.
  • Conduct internal health and safety audits, covering both administrative tasks and project-specific audits.
  • Manage external audits and keep documentation on the company’s internal systems up to date.
  • Carry out Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) assessments and implement any necessary follow-up actions.

Advisory and Support Roles:

  • Serve as the internal health and safety expert, offering advice and guidance to staff.
  • Liaise with internal and external health and safety experts and stakeholders.
  • Support and manage the delivery of CDM roles, including acting as CDM Principal Contractor and Principal Designer.
  • Monitor legislative updates and ensure the company’s health and safety practices comply with current laws.


Documentation and Record-Keeping:

  • Maintain and update health and safety records, including ROSPA submissions, performance data, and training records.
  • Ensure documentation is readily accessible and up to date on the company’s internal platforms.


Committee Involvement:

  • Coordinate, attend, and document health and safety-related meetings, ensuring all records and minutes are properly maintained.


Project Involvement:

  • Contribute to fee-earning projects, ensuring health and safety standards are integrated into project delivery.



About you


Qualifications and Education:

  • Degree: A degree in a relevant subject such as Engineering, Health & Safety, Science, or Business.
  • Health & Safety Qualification: A recognised industry qualification in Health & Safety.
  • Professional Membership: Membership of relevant professional industry bodies.


Experience:

  • Health & Safety Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in Health & Safety and risk management, with the ability to act as a trusted advisor to business leaders.
  • ISO Standards: Experience in achieving and maintaining ISO standards accreditation.
  • Policy Compliance: Ability to facilitate understanding, adoption, and compliance with relevant policies and procedures within the business.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Health & Safety Systems: Knowledge of Health & Safety management systems, ideally within an engineering, consultancy, or professional services environment.
  • Training and Presentations: Experience in delivering training and corporate presentations.
  • IT Systems: Ability to work with the company’s IT systems.


Behaviours:

  • Adaptability: Comfortable with responding to and leading organisational changes.
  • Communication: Clear and precise verbal and written communication skills, suitable for a professional consultancy environment.

  • Vision and Leadership: Ability to understand and communicate a vision for managing Health & Safety, risk, and compliance within the business.
  • Issue Escalation: Competence in appropriately and timely escalating issues to management or the board.
