London England, United Kingdom Trustpilot Full time

Our vision is to be the universal symbol of trust, bringing consumers and businesses together through reviews. We are well on our way—but there’s still an exciting journey ahead. Join us at the heart of trust.

We are looking for an exceptional Senior Counsel to join our forward-thinking Privacy Team, sitting at the heart of Trustpilot’s broader Trust & Transparency function and playing a key role in a constantly innovating business on a mission to transform trust online. This position will provide the opportunity to play a lead role across Trustpilot’s privacy programme and to own and drive the solving of a range of challenging, diverse, and often ambiguous problems at the cutting edge of online trust, privacy, AI, and other technology-related legal issues. You will report to our Director of Privacy, and work closely with various stakeholders across all levels and departments including our Data Protection Officer, Chief Trust Officer, CISO, and Chief Data Officer.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Ensure that our product, services, and data processing activities align with all key privacy requirements across all markets, focussing in particular on GDPR, the ePrivacy Directive, CCPA, and other emerging US and international laws;
  • Drive high-profile and high-impact multi-jurisdictional data-related initiatives across the business, supporting and advising key stakeholders on a broad range of privacy and AI-related legal issues and making pragmatic risk-based decisions as you balance business needs against the requirements of international law;
  • Monitor and evaluate proposed, pending, and new data-related legislation and recommend changes necessary to ensure compliance;
  • Draft and negotiate privacy provisions in a wide range of contracts, maintain and update policies and procedures relating to data privacy, maintain records of processing activities, prepare DPIAs, LIAs, work on international data transfer assessments, and respond to data subjects on DSARs, erasure requests and other data subject rights requests;
  • Get stuck into AI Governance and help to build out Trustpilot’s strategy around the use of AI as well as working closely with the teams developing AI;
  • Assist with investigating, assessing, and responding to any data incidents, including preparation of notices to affected data subjects and appropriate authorities;
  • Help operationalise privacy and introduce automated, scalable solutions to improve management of privacy tickets, data records, PIAs, and other privacy projects and processes;
  • Measure privacy maturity and compliance and report on key metrics and risk to senior stakeholders;
  • Prepare and deliver privacy & AI training and improve privacy & AI awareness throughout the organisation;
  • Respond to regulatory investigations and requests for information;
  • Mentor more junior members of the Privacy Team.

Who you are:

  • A right to practice law in either England & Wales, Scotland or Denmark;
  • Trained at a top law firm but with experience working in-house, ideally in the technology sector;
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about privacy, AI, and other technology-related legal issues;
  • A self-starter and motivated individual who is comfortable owning complex projects and problems and can think creatively to identify and implement solutions with business stakeholders;
  • Able to think strategically, but keen to roll up your sleeves and ‘make things happen’;
  • Experience advising operating across multiple jurisdictions;
  • Top class drafting, negotiation, and communication skills;
  • Experience operationalizing privacy and reporting on key privacy metrics;
  • A fun, innovative, and positive personality who remains unfazed through difficult situations;
  • An ability to work independently in a fast-paced, global organisation, while maintaining close contact with stakeholders across multiple locations;
  • Fluency in English.

Desirable features:

  • CIPP or other privacy-specific qualifications;
  • Experience operating in a 2-sided marketplace;
  • Experience in start-up/scale-up/listed environments;
  • Experience in a consumer-focused business or industry;
  • Experience working in a global or multinational environment;
  • Project management experience;
  • Additional European language.

We are:

A down-to-earth, fun, and engaging team of experienced lawyers who pride ourselves on being positively human and collaborative. Extensive legal knowledge is a given, but an ability to provide commercial, entrepreneurial advice in a global environment is what makes us stand apart from the rest. The Trust & Legal team is bringing real change within the business and the wider online review sector, with a mission to help Trustpilot become a universal symbol of trust and upgrade the world.

What’s in it for you:

  • A range of flexible working options to dedicate time to what matters to you
  • Competitive compensation package + bonus
  • 25 days holiday per year, increasing to 28 days after 2 years of employment
  • Two (paid) volunteering days a year to spend your time giving back to the causes that matter to you and your community
  • Rich learning and development opportunities are supported through the Trustpilot Academy, LinkedIn Learning, and Blinkist
  • Pension and life insurance
  • Health cash plan, online GP, 24/7, Employee Assistance Plan
  • Full access to Headspace, a popular mindfulness app to promote positive mental health
  • Paid parental leave
  • Season ticket loan and a cycle-to-work scheme
  • Central office location complete with table tennis, a gaming corner, coffee bars and all the snacks and refreshments you can ask for
  • Regular opportunities to connect and get to know your fellow Trusties, including company-wide celebrations and events, ERG activities, and team socials.
  • Access to over 4,000 deals and discounts on things like travel, electronics, fashion, fitness, cinema discounts, and more.
  • Independent financial advice and free standard professional mortgage broker advice

Still not sure?

We want to be a part of creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world of work for all. We’re excited to hear about your experiences as well as how you will contribute to our working culture. So, even if you don’t feel you don't meet all the requirements, we'd still really like to hear from you
