Do you want a career that allows you to support positive social, environmental and economic impact?

Do you believe in the power of social enterprise to improve the world, local communities, systems and people’s respective qualities of life?

SSE is seeking a Head of Development who will drive SSE’s development strategy to deliver a broad and expanded income scale, including corporate sector, trusts, foundations, government, and limited individual donors.

This role requires a highly skilled leader with exceptional capabilities in income generation, writing, budgeting, people management and strategic planning. The Head of Development will manage a small team and work closely with senior leadership to ensure SSE’s financial sustainability and growth.

Who we are looking for

  • You’ll demonstrate a proven track record in income generation and business development.
  • You’ll possess exceptional writing skills for bid and proposal development.
  • You’ll hold strong numerical skills and experience in budget creation and management.
  • Excellent relationship-building and networking abilities
  • An ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership and various teams.
  • A strategic thinker with a proactive and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Experienced in leading and managing high-performing teams.

Who We Are

We can’t fix issues like poverty, climate change and ill-health alone. That’s why the School for Social Entrepreneurs exists. SSE helps 1,000 people a year develop the skills, strengths and networks they need to tackle society’s biggest problems. It runs courses that equip people to start, scale and strengthen organisations that make a positive difference. But it is not a traditional school. Learning with SSE is inspiring, action-based and accessible. SSE supports people in other ways too, such as funding and mentoring. Lord Michael Young founded SSE as a charity in 1997, and it’s grown to a network of schools across the UK, Canada and India. Together, SSE is changing lives and transforming communities.

Our vision is a socially and environmentally just society, where the potential of all people is fully realised. Our mission is to empower and equip people with entrepreneurial ideas and solutions to grow the social economy.

Why work for us?

SSE is a vibrant organisation; we work entrepreneurially and are committed to providing quality learning opportunities for social entrepreneurs, community businesses and social sector leaders. Working here is engaging, exciting and demanding. If you are someone who enjoys creating solutions and contributing your ideas you’ll enjoy how we work.

At SSE, everyone’s ideas are welcome for how we can learn and improve. People at all levels contribute ideas for our future, and we collaborate with our UK teams and international teams to share best practice. We like to enjoy good times together too, because changing the world is an exciting task that’s worth celebrating

We want to work with (and continue to develop) individuals who can embody and demonstrate the following values and mindset:

  • We are always learning
  • We are collaborative
  • We are entrepreneurial
  • We are inclusive
  • We are trusting

Aside from that, we have a great range of benefits and opportunities to get involved in the life of SSE. Our team are spread nationwide and we are supportive of flexible, remote and hybrid working.

Outline of the role

Working closely with the SMT and Head of Finance, the Head of Development will play a critical role in driving SSE's income generation and business development to deliver a broad and expanded income scale, including corporate sector, trusts, foundations, government, and limited individual donors. This will include identifying new business opportunities and secure new and repeat business across all programmes, developing and writing compelling bids and project proposals to generate new business aligned with SSE’s strategic objectives.

Equality and Diversity

Diversity is a fact of life. Inclusion is a choice and a practice – for organisations and individuals. At the School for Social Entrepreneurs, our aim is to drive inclusion into every area and activity of what we do: from access to programmes, to grant investment, to board, staff and partnerships.

However you identify, we would like to hear from you. In our commitment to continue to diversify our teams, freelance staff and programmes, we are particularly keen to hear from those who identify as: being from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds; LGBTQ+; and those with disabilities.

If you require any reasonable adjustments during our recruitment processes, including assistance with reading this page or documents linked to below, please contact

Application

The deadline for applications is 9am on Wednesday 25th September 2024.

Expressing interest in the role, we'll ask you to share your CV and tell us why you are interested in the role and what would make you a great fit.
