JOB PURPOSE
To play a key role in the design and development of innovative products at OPD.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Working in our design team, you’ll bring your experience of product development to produce innovative designs that meet the specification, delight our clients, are reliable and cost effective to manufacture. If you’re a talented designer with an inquiring mind that is excited by the challenge of working in a fast paced consultancy environment then you’ll fit right in. Working collaboratively and building strong relationships with colleagues and clients is key to our success, but it’s also important that you can work independently and autonomously as well.
The consultancy environment will give you experience in a wide and diverse variety of work, allowing you to develop your technical skills and widen your commercial experience. You’ll find yourself working on all sorts of things – there really is no such thing as a typical week at OPD. What we can be sure of though is that you’ll get challenging problems to solve and be part of a skilled and friendly team who will support you along the way.

Each of our clients benefit from our shared passion and combined knowledge, and we bring together decades of experience across disciplines - from industrial design to mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, prototyping and manufacture.
ABOUT YOU
· A technically savvy, creative problem solver with a meticulous and methodical approach to the details of the designn· Degree qualified in mechanical engineering or related disciplinen· High level theoretical understanding of the principles of mechanical engineeringn· Good understanding of materials and manufacturing processesn· Clear and confident communicator with a preference for pictures over wordsn· Strong 3D CAD skills (preferably SolidWorks)n· Be able to demonstrate analytical and/or simulation skillsn· Experienced and capable at building relationships with clients and suppliersn· Several years of demonstrable experience in product development, preferably within a consultancy environmentn· Experience of bringing at least one product to market successfullyn· Familiarity with ISO 9001 working processes

We are based in a beautiful historic barn in Harwell, Oxfordshire. There is plenty of on-site parking and the studio is well connected by bus and rail links. The collaborative nature of this role means that you will be expected to be in the office at minimum three days a week, but there is the opportunity to work flexibly from home as and when this fits with project delivery requirements.
WHAT YOU'LL GET IN RETURN

We offer a competitive salary, health insurance, pension and bonus scheme. You’ll get 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays) and paid leave on your birthday, wedding day, or if you’re buying a house or taking your child for their first day at school. You can purchase another 5 days of holiday a year, spread across 12 months, or sell back holiday at any point. After 3 years of working at OPD you can apply for an unpaid sabbatical of up to 3 months, increasing to 6 months after 6 years.
You’ll be allocated ten days of training per year, with a training budget of up to 5% of your annual salary. We’re a member of the cycle to work scheme which allows you to purchase a bike and related accessories tax free, we offer season ticket loans and have an Employee Assistance Programme for you and your family. And if you’re in the office on a Thursday, we’ll buy lunch for you
