The Role:
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Head of HSE to lead and manage safety operations within our hydrogen infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will have an extensive operations background, with in-depth knowledge of handling gases, including their safe transportation from the source to refuelling stations, trailers, and delivery to customer locations. This role will be a mix of 1-2 days in the office, with a few days at installation sites ensuring compliance, and embedding a strong safety culture across all operational touchpoints.
Head of HSE Key Responsibilities:
* Monitor and ensure the safe movement of hydrogen through various stages—source, refuelling, transportation (trailers), and final delivery to customers—across multiple sites.
* Actively visit customer sites, refuelling stations, and operational depots to assess safety
* standards, conduct audits, and provide hands-on guidance for best practices.
* Conduct thorough risk assessments related to the handling and transportation of hydrogen gas and develop mitigation strategies.
* Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, including industry standards and environmental requirements related to hydrogen.
* Lead investigations into any safety incidents or near-misses, identify root causes, and drive continuous improvement in safety processes.
* Provide health and safety training to teams, ensuring they are equipped to handle hydrogen gas in various environments.
* Develop, update, and enforce company health and safety policies, ensuring alignment with the latest industry trends and regulatory changes.
* Develop KPIs, SHEQ metrics, including incident reports, safety performance, environmental impact data, and quality assurance documentation
* Work closely with engineering, sourcing and logistics teams to ensure seamless and safe delivery of hydrogen infrastructure projects.
* Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and compliance reports, delivering regular updates to senior management and stakeholders.
* Lead the development and implementation of process safety, including hazard identification (HAZID), hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), LOPA if applicable and emergency response planning.
* Manage environmental performance, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements on emissions, waste management, and resource efficiency.
Head of HSE Key Requirements:
* 10-15 years in a health and safety role with a focus on operations in gas handling, transportation or energy sectors.
* Experience in hydrogen or other renewable energy sources is highly preferred.
* Strong understanding of the hydrogen supply chain, including gas movement from source to refuelling, trailer transportation, and final delivery to customers.
* Proven track record of implementing and managing health and safety standards in field-based operations, especially in environments involving high-pressure gases or hazardous materials.
* Ability to build relationships with customers and stakeholders, conduct site visits, and provide safety guidance in real-time settings.
* Willingness to spend the majority of time on the road, visiting client sites and operational facilities with 1-2 days in the office each week.
* A relevant degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field. Certification in health and safety management (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) is preferred.
* Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive and hands-on approach to managing health and safety challenges.
