Clerk to the Governors

8 Hours per week

Grade 4 - £23,500 pro rata or £12.18 per hour

Sackville is a popular and oversubscribed large, mixed, 11-18 comprehensive with 1700 students on roll. Sackville has a governing board of 12 Governors one of which is the head teacher.

We require a clerk to provide advice and guidance to the governing board on governance, constitutional and procedural matters. A professional clerk will contribute towards the efficient and effective functioning of our governing board and its committees.

In summary a clerk would:

  • provide administrative and organisational support and guidance to ensure that the board works in compliance with the appropriate legal and regulatory framework
  • understands the potential consequences for non-compliance
  • provide advice on procedural matters relating to the operation of the board.

There is extensive training, advice and guidance available through the West Sussex County Council so although good knowledge of the board’s statutory requirements and responsibilities is necessary for the role, this training can be done within the role if required.

The successful candidate should have good interpersonal and organisational skills, be a strong communicator and be able to work as part of a successful team. Our meetings are held on Monday evenings at 6pm and last an average of 2 1/2 hours, there are around 10 meetings a year and it is essential that these are attended. There may, at times, be additional meetings during the year if complaint or exclusion governor panels are required. Which may be held during the school day. Extra hours will be paid for managing these if required.
