The starting salary is £43,227, which includes allowances totalling £2,841.

The salary is broken down as £40,386, basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £45,615. Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

We now need a capable Motor Vehicle Technician to help us service and maintain our vehicles day to day. Join us - and make sure every car, motorbike and bicycle is in sound condition and ready to hit the streets.

Vehicles are a workplace for our officers and staff, carrying sophisticated equipment, or providing a safe environment for transporting the public and prisoners. To keep them in the best possible state, we have Fleet Services, who are responsible for all aspects of fleet lifecycle management.

As part of the team, you’ll take on a range of fleet servicing tasks, supporting technical supervisors. It means you’ll be checking the condition of vehicle components, maintaining hi-tech test equipment, and inspecting and road testing vehicles.

One of your most important jobs will be maintaining front line response, covert and specialist fleet vehicles. You’ll perform repairs and services for these vehicles in our Fleet Services specialist workshops, which are located across London.

Interested? To join us, you must be qualified to IMI NVQ or City and Guilds Level 3 in light/heavy passenger vehicle maintenance and repair (or equivalent). A full UK driving licence is of course, essential, along with a natural talent for teamwork.

Our operational policing fleet comprises of over 5000 vehicles, 1000 pedal cycles and 25 marine vessels. Vehicles are a workplace for our officers and staff, carrying sophisticated equipment for operational policing, or providing a safe environment for the transport of the public and prisoners. By their very nature, vehicles are often used in the most arduous and challenging conditions.

Fleet Services are responsible for all aspects of fleet lifecycle management to the Met, including the service, maintenance and repair of police vehicles and vessels.

The Role

Dependent upon your location preference and vacancy availability the primary role of a motor vehicle technician is to ensure that vehicles are serviced and maintained promptly and effectively and are ready for essential police operations. The role holder will:

  • Maintain front line response, covert and specialist fleet within Fleet Services specialist workshops by providing efficient scheduled and unscheduled maintenance repairs on the vehicle fleet.
  • Reduce vehicle maintenance costs and maximise fleet availability by ensuring repairs on the vehicle fleet are timely and necessary.
  • Support the technical supervisors to maintain the delivery of an effective and efficient service.
  • Accurately determine the serviceability of all vehicle components, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic, using industry recognised tools and equipment
  • Visually inspect and road test vehicles, interpreting feedback from the vehicle’s correct function
  • Diagnose electrical faults accurately, using high and low technology electrical test equipment to ensure they achieve or exceed vehicle manufacturer's standards.
  • Accurately record obtained measurements and data on completed work, compiling technical reports where necessary
  • Maintain high technology test equipment to configure and reconfigure the appropriate system correctly.
  • Accurately follow the end-to-end process for each manufacturer’s warranty process
  • Read, interpret, and analyse wiring diagrams, making use of interactive guides available from various manufacturer's diagnostic equipment and web-based mediums.
  • Follow multiple manufacturers repair instructions, specific methods, and techniques.
  • Take responsibility for personal development and keep up to date with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Continuously understand wider Met activity and decision making to assess potential impact on local delivery.
  • Transfer knowledge and skills to apprentices and less technical staff.
