Role Overview:
The Mechanical Technician will join a dynamic, multi-skilled team at the Cranfield Precision site. The primary responsibilities involve the build, assembly, testing, and development of high-precision special purpose machinery and test equipment. This role also requires global travel for machine installation, upgrades, and service support at customer sites.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Delivery: Execute new machine builds and R&D projects according to schedule.
Technical Liaison: Maintain effective communication with project teams and stakeholders, including comprehensive site visit reports and timesheets.
Customer Interaction: Represent Cranfield Precision and Fives positively at customer sites, ensuring top-notch service.
Continuous Improvement: Collaborate with staff to enhance customer service offerings.
Commissioning & Setup: Assist in commissioning, setup, and error correction of ultra-precision machine tools.
Safety & Compliance: Adhere to Fives Values and Directives, particularly regarding health and safety standards.
Additional Duties: Perform other reasonable tasks as requested.Required Skills & Qualifications:
Educational Background: Relevant engineering qualification in mechanical discipline (HNC/HND, C&G, BTEC, etc.) or proven industry experience.
Personal Attributes: Self-motivated with a proactive attitude, effective communication skills, and the ability to work independently or within a team.
Technical Skills: Logical problem-solving and fault-finding abilities, proficiency in basic software (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Licenses & Flexibility: Full UK driving license and passport for travel, willingness to work additional hours and abroad for up to 6 weeks if necessary.
Physical Requirements: Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces, and manage time to meet tight deadlines.Specialist Skills:
Machining & Modification: Proficient in using manual machine shop equipment (milling machine, lathe, surface grinder).
Licenses & Training: Forklift license (B1, preferably B2), trained in overhead cranes, lifting, and slinging.
Mechanical Interpretation: Skilled in reading, understanding, and manufacturing from mechanical component and assembly drawings.
Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems: Knowledgeable in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including interpretation and fault finding.
Precision Skills: Experience in building ultra-precision machine tools, using micron and arc second data, and scraping machine beds and guideways to micron tolerances.
Metrology Systems: Understanding and application of machine metrology systems, calibration methods, and adjustments.
Measurement & Correction: Ability to measure critical machine features, interpret results, and perform corrective actions, such as achieving ?5?m straightness over 5m length and ?2 arc second crosswind error.Desirable Knowledge:
Familiarity with Cranfield Precision Machines: Knowledge of Nanoroll, EcoR diamond turning machines, OGM, and TTG grinding machines.
R&D Setups: Experience in R&D setups and trials for precision bearing or optical grinding, including grinding wheel mounting, component mount setup, support shoe manufacture and alignment, and bespoke coolant nozzle setup.Please apply if you fill you would be a good fit
