We have a contract vacancy for an exceptional, forward-thinking, hands-on unit manager to take on the running of an organic grazing unit in stunning countryside in the very heart of Devon.
This is one of two units run by the owners, with the other (where they live) being 40 minutes away, making this a highly autonomous role.
You will take an active role in all aspects of the farm incorporating milking, breeding, calving, grassland management, herd health, caring for youngstock and record keeping, as well as managing the team and liaising with outside agencies (vets, consultant, contractors, milk buyer, etc) and, most importantly, the owners. You will be actively involved with all decision making and will lead discussions with the farm consultant.
The herd is made up of 240-crossbred cows, predominately spring calved, with a small autumn block. Milking is through a modern 20/40 Swingover parlour allied to good handling and cubicle housing with a newly covered feeding area. The farm has been laid out for grazing with a very good network of tracks and paddocks.
We are seeking someone with a proven track record of managing a unit who can seamlessly step into the role, soon to be vacated by the current manager who is leaving after 30 highly successful years to pursue other interests. There is also an option for full or part-time work for your partner.
In return we offer a salary commensurate with the position and accommodation in the form of a large farmhouse on the unit.
