If so, J Murphy and Sons Ltd are currently recruiting for an Operations Director to join our award-winning Energy team. Our team is known for its extensive in-house expertise and continual drive to innovate within the industry. The Operations Director will lead and be accountable for the safe, timely and profitable delivery of Overhead Line (OHL) projects across the UK. The Operations Director will support the Managing Director to develop and deliver strategic initiatives and business plan objectives.

Following the 'One Murphy' approach, we're able to deliver all aspects of the projects we work on. Murphy has designed, constructed, and commissioned projects for clients such as National Grid, SSE and Ørsted, on both transmission and distribution networks within the Energy sector.

What you will be doing:

  • Support the business unit director in the day-to-day management of the business unit.
  • Work collaboratively with peers to lead the development and implementation of business improvement initiatives.
  • Design the organisation structure of the portfolio - building and organising teams.
  • Contribute to the development of business unit and sector plans and strategies
  • Provide leadership to the project teams - empowering and inspiring others to successfully deliver.
  • Act as a line manager for functional and operational resources.
  • Ensure that the project leads understand their roles and responsibilities.
  • Strategic resource requirements - assess current and future resource requirements, ensuring plans are devised and implemented to overcome gaps, and capacity issues.
  • Lead the coordination and dissemination of communications within their portfolio.
  • Lead and promote collaboration between projects in their portfolio and with other areas of the business.
  • Drive high standards of project management across their portfolio.
  • Ensure that projects are delivered safely, on time & in accordance with contract requirements and to the agreed budgets.
  • Ensure that projects are effectively led and controlled.
  • Ensure that project teams are accountable for the financial performance of the project.
  • Contribute to the work winning process - proactively engaging with bid teams to support tender submissions.
  • Lead client engagement and negotiations.
  • Cultivate and manage collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic client and supplier relationship management.
  • Ensure effective and regular communication with internal stakeholders regarding project
  • performance, business and portfolio risks and issues.

Who are we looking for?

  • HND/Degree qualification
  • Experience within High Voltage linear projects i.e., Overhead Lines / HV Cables.
  • Leadership of project teams.
  • Expertise in the management of a portfolio of Civil Engineering projects.
  • Client and stakeholder management
  • Expertise in business change and improvement initiatives
  • Expertise in reviewing project performance
  • Good commercial and contractual awareness
  • Proficient in safety management and leadership.
