Purpose of Job
To supervise and monitor the work of SMS employees and sub-contractors. To support Management in maintaining and monitoring employee compliance with rules, regulations, health and safety, and company operational procedures.

Principle Duties

  • Essential must have a background in fabrication & welding refurb specific. Preferable to have experience Marine / Ports.
  • Experience of working with working with Trailer modification, Container top safety frames service / repairs, Reefer Gantry repairs, Container handling spreader frames, Spreader beams (quay cranes and rubber tyred gantry cranes) full structural repairs including coded welding, Crane headblocks repairs / servicing, Overheight frames repairs / servicing, Rubber tyred gantry cranes structural repairs and modification, Quay cranes structural repairs, Quay crane repairs including major structural work requiring coded welding and all rail joint repairs, replacement and rework, Maintenance to gantry rails, Fender replacement and repair, miscellaneous Port related plant and equipment.
  • Supervise and monitor employees' work, ensuring the required quality and safety standards and associated procedures are met. Supervisors are also expected to diversify between supervising other trades in a support level.
  • To understand the hours, materials, consumables and equipment quoted on a job and complete the work on time and on budget.
  • To report progress on jobs to managers, especially if there is a problem which may have an impact on the cost or completion of the project.
  • To ensure each job has the relevant RAMS before start working, these are read and understood by the team and safe working procedures are applied to all jobs, including Take 5 paperwork and permits to work.
  • To carry out procurement of consumables, plant and materials to support the managers such that a job or site does not run out of such items.
  • Ensure good time keeping and conduct of staff in line with agreed policies and procedures.
  • Ensure standards of good housekeeping are achieved in all work areas, including workshops, stores, vehicles and at on site locations.
  • To assist Management in ensuring that all tools/equipment issued are accounted for and traceable to prevent financial loss to the Company and also to report any instances of theft/loss.
  • To ensure that he/she is contactable via telephone to suit the emergency/responsive nature of the Company's core business and client base and may be expected to undertake oncall activities when required.
  • To travel to sites/customers to survey work and assist in the quotation process of any project deemed as required.
  • In addition to the responsibilities listed above, all employees must be flexible in their approach and undertake other duties that are commensurate with the post holder's level, wherever they may be, to achieve the objectives of the Company.
  • Good communication skills including spoken and written English and must be able to communicate sensitively, politely and clearly with staff, managers, suppliers and customers.

Qualifications for the position of Welding Foreman

  • Expected to be time served NVQ Level 3 apprenticeship / HNC/NC Welding & Fabrication /Marine Qualification.
  • Must have at least 2 years supervision experience, with minimum of five years trade experience in the marine industry.
  • Be prepared and confident to travel, as required, for the overall gain of the business. Full UK driving licence.
  • Must have good demonstrable organisational skills.
  • Must be able to interpret technical drawings, schematic parts manuals and diagrams and associated technical data & specifications.
  • Must have relevant experience in the supervision of personnel to include the monitoring of work output & quality.
  • Must be able to work as part of a team and be able to motivate.
  • Any CAD experience would be Advantageous.

Safety Responsibilities


You are responsible for ensuring that you and all employees under your control work safely and comply with all current and relevant health, safety and environmental legislation.

You are responsible for ensuring that employees implement safe systems of work according to SMS procedures.


You are responsible for ensuring your own safety and that of the employees under your control and of visitors and the general public when on SMS property.


You must adhere to all criteria contained within the SMS IMS, the SMS Staff Handbook, the Safety, Health and Environment Handbook and the Drivers Handbook.

You must adhere to all criteria relating to the Company Substance Misuse policy.

You must ensure that accidents, incidents and near misses to you or staff under your control are reported and record
